... The Khalif of Valby: Dexter Gordon
in Copenhagen, 1962-1976." It's really about Black jazz musicians living in
Europe and how that changed the scene there and how it changed them.
Of course now I am adding James Baldwin, who lived in Istanbul in the 60s,
to the talk. Tomorrow I will try to find where he lived and next week I will meet
his very good friend, the very famous actor Engin Cezzar.

... has passed since I arrived in Istanbul. I believe I have grown as a person, in confidence, independence, world perspective, and probably in many other ways that I am unaware of. Writing the blog was extremely rewarding, with all the positive feedback and the many visits that my profile has gotten. I have had a huge amount of support the whole way, and that has been really gratifying. I really have developed a passion for ...
Istanbul, Turkey willinturkey... The picture says it all. There is no time to wait in this busy city. Twenty Two billion dollars a year flows into Turkey from tourism and this is a town ready to take it all. Unlike Rome however the food is reasonably priced and you can stop for a good coffee and only spend $4.00. Rome would be triple this. Lunches will set ...
Istanbul, Turkey mikeandfi... the school's other math teacher and I as the staff team, combined in our staff vs. students game to outscore the students 50-25. I must say that despite momentary lapses, I’ve picked up the game of football (or as you 'mericans say, soccer) quite well and really enjoy playing. Also last week Jason and I organized a math evening where kids and their parents came in and did math problems and completed a maze through the school. It was fun and nice to see ...
Istanbul, Turkey robconr... wallops me in the face, rendering my glasses useless. I am left with the options of keeping them on my face and wandering around half-blindly or taking them off... and wandering around half-blindly. I opt for the latter and try to take in my surroundings as well as my myopia permits. The central "belly stone" is approximately six metres in diameter and heated by an unseen fire below. Surrounding it are dozens of individual basins, each ...
Istanbul, Turkey jef_smiOk, Stan just left an hour ago, and I am really sad. I only have 11 more days in Istanbul. 11 more days to write two 3000-word papers. 11 more days to sulk about leaving this place. 11 more days to visit the 6 places left on my to-visit list. Instead of facebooking and wallowing in sorrow all day, I made a dinner reservation for 9 at Leb-i-derya, a semi-expensive bar-restaurant with one of the nicest views in the city. My ...
Istanbul, Turkey sojanet... is the point in the blog where i have run out of things to say, but i feel like writing a haiku. so, here it goes: Istanbul is hot home to many old treasures i want to go swim clearly, poetry is not my knack, but i do enjoy putting together eclectic mixes of words and call them art. ok, im starting to run on. i think it may be time for me to sign off for now. may your day be excellent and your dreams filled with beautiful images. ~ a to tha shley
Istanbul, Turkey fyonehara... version started. We're soon rolling up to the landing gate..but.. oh my gosh, we're back at JFK. I ;say to him "I think we did a U-turn. This is the same terminal we flew out of. He says he thought that of JFK when he first landed there. The architecture is very similar, but he assures me we ARE in Turkey. And soon, I see the Istanbul airport sign, and a lot of Turkish Airline planes...whew! Being in the front, I had to wait out on the ramp for Julie, who is the back of ...
Istanbul, Turkey kupdegra... to see some amazing parts of the old city, temples, palaces and forts before leaving for Delhi. In Delhi it was good to see that the government is implementing measures to combat the gross pollution problems. All rickshaws have been converted to LPG and as of about 2 weeks ago, all diesel buses have banned from the city, plastic bags are also banned throughout the city. In the time that we were there, the air pollution levels had halved, but were still above ...
