Maldives

... There were around 4 or 5 other couples/families. We were all paired with a guide upon reaching the Male shore. The guy took us all around Male. The whole island is like 2 Sq.Kms. We started off with a mosque. In case you had not covered your shoulders and knees, they would give you a cloth to wrap around you before you step inside. It was a beautiful huge mosque with tall minarets. It was huge inside with nicely decorated carpets/rug. It was ...

Back to Male

... apparently a bigger fish bit the lower half off my fish. It was a lot of fun, we don't use poles, but plastic water bottles with fishing line attached. when we would catch the fish we pulled the line out by hand. It was a little tough but fun, and these fish weighed A LOT. We were back in the house by 2 am and we had dinner at 3 am. Late dinner is normal for Maldivians, they usually eat around 2230 or 2300. A late wake up the next day. The family went to Friday prayer and ...

Liveaboard diving

I left Komandoo with a heavy heart early morning on Friday July 20th. I'd love to go back there with a significant other some day. The flight back to Male went fine and I was transferred to the boat where I was going to stay for a week of diving. The boat Manthiri is an 85 foot vessel made for liveaboard diving. There were 10 guests there for the week, which is pretty good as I like uncrowded diving. 5 guests ...

1350 Mile Arabian Sea Sailing Adventure

... what the heck I do once I land back in New Zealand in a few weeks! March 14th, 2007, 13 deg N, 61 deg E, ten days into the crossing: On March 10th, we were sitting out under the bimini enjoying the morning when Nicky and I realize a boat is coming in our direction. Soon, very soon we realize it is on full power coming directly at us.. "ANDY!" is soon declared to the skipper below. Andy presents himself from his sleep and we soon realize yes, it is a boat coming to visit. Now ...

In Beautiful Muslim Maldives

... an awful lot. They either get much friendlier as the evening goes on, or they get really comatose. I'm usually stuck with the comatose ones as my dinner companions. Maybe that says more about me than about them. We got more gossip about the other passengers last night at dinner. Lloyd is Dr Tinkle, 96 years young, and was a dentist. He's traveled on all the world cruises. He is a tiny little gnome and he often wears foreign costumes that I'm sure he acquired during his ...

Music and Dance - finally

Okay - another final entry. Don't be surprised if there is a final final entry from me once I'm back home. For those who know me, that is my writing format - "that's all for now" and then I write another two paragraphs. I felt that something I was missing was the music and dance of Maldives - some sense of cultural traditions. I spoke with an expat teaching and living on one of the islands and she was raving about music and dance and how wonderful it was to see. I thought it was ...

Two months in Maldives

... trip to Giravaru Resort and a three day trip to Thulhaagiri Island Resort. We were a little out of place in this "Lovers' Paradise" resort but we had the pool to ourselves most of the weekend - either because people preferred the ocean or they wanted to avoid the kids. Either way it worked out well. The pool was small but tucked into part of the restaurant so sheltered by the thatched roof and many palm trees. At the same time it was right on the beach. We had ...

Oh my god we are off to the Maldives

... for travel agents back home. What a life! She has us in stitches as she tells us no matter where in the world she travels she always meets some one from sunny Huddersfield. If you have managed to check out the website, apologies for forgetting your name - it's all this sun! The sea plane was a buzz we sat at the back and took what seemed like a million pics. The view was something else and the island we were heading for looked amazing even before we stepped foot on it ...

Maldives: this must be paradise

After having far too many leaving do´s, I finally left the UK on 16th January. First stop Maldives, and what a first stop that was! A week of relaxing on the whitest beaches I had ever seen, snorkeling in clear, blue water and recuperating to get ready for 5 months of travelling the world. What more can one want?
