Veracruz, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico
... and i had a rewarding day exploring it. It was the place where the Spanish entered Mexico and became their first settlement, so lots of history. Wandered around a fort, went to see some manatees in an aquarium (they weren´t there) and got chatting to a local historian at the Museum. It was a nice little spot to break up my journey, but i have got my first overnight bus tonight!

Veracruz, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico meluebkeHost Family Day in Veracruz!

I am sitting in the living room of my host family's house, drinking freshly-squeezed orange juice, and enjoying this relaxing day. I will need to start packing as we leave for Puebla, Mexico on Monday! I am going to miss this family and this town so very much but am anxious to keep traveling and experience two more cities on Mexico (Puebla and Mexico City) before leaving for Europe on October 5!

I cannot express enough how truly wonderful ...
Veracruz, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico meluebke... the stories that that site could tell :)

Today (Thursday) was an awesome day as well. We spent the morning cleaning the Northern part of a Veracruz beach which happens to also be a National Park. It is a popular tourist attraction as well as the home to a large coral reef population and a destination for sea turtles looking to bury their eggs. After sweating profusely and picking up trash for about 2 hours, we went to a local senior citizen ...

Veracruz, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico meluebke... Here's another one and while it may not exactly be a life lesson, it is certainly something for which to be appreciative:

The plumbing in Mexico is not that of the United States. Thus we must dispose of our toilet paper in the nearby waste basket.

Be appreciate of your plumbing if you are able to flush everything down the toilet.

Happy Thursday! And remember, Life is Good :)

Veracruz, Central Mexico and Gulf Coast, Mexico meluebke... to a group and go on field trips. My first Thursday field trip was to Cempoala and Antigua with an instructor and one other student. The instructors show you how to take the local buses and go anywhere. After sightseeing and a lot of walking we had lunch at a local restaurant beside the river in Antigua. I could not say enough good things about the school in veracruz, I certainly got more than I had hoped for and then some. The other students that I ...
Veracruz, Mexico frostforest... his products go at such a good price. You could see it in his eyes, better to make something than nothing. But it hurt. When it was time to pay this entrepreneur I asked him to open the palm of his hand. He looked at me with wide eyes. With some hesitation he did as I had asked. Into his palm I placed roughly double our agreed price! To this day I am not sure he understood my gesture. You could look at it as the ugly American playing ...
Veracruz, Mexico lavidanuevaWe headed for Veracruz for Carnival, started drinking in the car on the way, and stayed a night in Puebla in a freezing hotel belonging to cousins of someone in our group. In Veracruz we stayed with Hugo's grandma, got trashed and danced at the parade, all got separated and ...
Veracruz, Mexico escapingseattleOnce you've got a load to carry, the last thing you want to do is travel. You want to get where you’re going as fast as you can. So I bypass all the little stops along the way, even the big stop in Mexico City, opting instead for the coastal route through Veracruz. I didn’t ...
