Today is Remembrance Day in The Netherlands and at 8pm tonight, 2 mins of silence will be observed all over the country. Flags are being flown at half mast everywhere.
We arrived at the Port of Nijmegen at about 8.30am. Nijmegen is the only town in the Netherlands that is actually built on a hill. The rest of the Netherlands is flat with most being built on reclaimed land from the sea.

We tried to post the letters at the local tobacco store, but the old man said we had to find a post box. It was so bizarre, because he was smoking so casually inside! It is something neither of us had ever experienced.

We also noted the Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas) and Zwarte Piet decorations ...

... into town to take up our position in the grandstands so that we could see our respective husbands cross the line and also many friends. Again, we were yelling encouragement to people who looked like they were just ready to lay down and die!! I am always amazing at how many of these people come back year after year! You would see whole families walking together – from Oma & Opa down to the youngest eligible grandchild (14 years). ...
