Bratislava, Slovakia

May 11 (Sun) Up early, packed and down to Platform 8. The train to Bratislava left on schedule at 10:10. We had a very fancy compartment -- 6 seats all to ourselves. The scenery was nice and mellow -- farmland, a few little medieval towns sprinkled through out -- nice touch, God! We had a sandwich and split a beer on the train -- left us with only a buck in Hungarian. Bill got a cheese sandwich, I got ham -- then we mixed and matched for a ham and cheese -- clever us. We got to the Bratislava...

Eaten Alive!!

Chlo found us a cheap three-star hotel in Bratislava through a Slovakian website, which described the hotel as “1970’s retro communist style”. We found the hotel to be everything described and more! The hotel was clearly tired, dated and featured original décor and fittings (including plastic flowers!). John felt like he had stepped back in time and was a character in a cold-war spy movie, so was constantly checking for hidden bugs and cameras. The hotel staff were friendly ...

We arrived at Bratislava Airport late in the evening and took a taxi to the hotel near the city centre. I was impressed with how clean the city was. The city (or the parts I saw of it) didn't give me an impression it was dirty at all. Yes, there are grafitti in places but that seems to be constant in any european city or even the world for that matter. We stayed at Hotel Kyjev. This was a 15-story hotel and we had the convenience (I'm being sarcastic here) of staying on the 15th floor. Initia...

... in Zlín, so that's the main thing. Jana was there to pick me up, and then we went grocery shopping for some snacks - we bought ingredients for smores, so once again, I'm internationalizing smores. If you've never had them, try them. They're a good campfire snack. Later that night Jana had rented her high school's gym, so 8 of us went and played soccer for about two hours. It was great fun, and to be honest I'm still a little sore 2 days later. I'm glad I've been ...

... dismal.

Bratislava is definitely an interesting place to see. It's probably a little better in the summer when you could rent a bike and ride into the countryside. Way too cold when I went there. One really cool thing I did was go to the opera. It was in this amazing old theatre building, and it was amazingly cheap-- apparently opera is a big thing there.

I spent Saturday wandering around Bratislava, and ...

... instead of the trail by this point. although we had some serious head winds the highway is lined with trees and stretches of beautiful fields. riding through little towns and seeing kids, dogs, and soccer matches was a better way to see slovakia then along the quite danube trail. the next night we had made it to the suburb of Bratislava (party-slava). - in Samorin we camped by the sports field and woke up early to ride in a thick ...

... side of the river where we arrived but the downtown was really nice. We stayed in a somewhat upscale place called The Carleton....gotta check that out on the web :) Definitely the best place to stay yet! We actually did arrive in Bratislava while the sun was still out so got to see see quite a bit before dark. Low key evening....ate another huge heavy meal, checked out some of the nightlife and called it quits earlier than 2am this time......big ride tomorrow!

Number One Pube?..interesting...

... for a swift drink (well 2)- I decided Slovak beer was good, but not up to Czech or German standards, on the wall they had a poster saying something like "Slovakias number 1 pube" I don't think they understood what I was grinning at. Wandered into the town centre, walked around for a bit and had another beer at a pub with its own internet cafe- Slovaks seemed like a friendly sort of ...

Have you ever seen Hostel?

... it's what you would imagine if you combined the movie hoste, every Japanese horror movie, and the shining all together. This is probably the most terrifying place I have ever slept, I won't even go to the bathroom by myself anymore. I'm convinced there is some sort of animal that keeps drinking from the toilet next to me when I'm in there but it's never there when I open the stall. But other than that it's a cozy place. Crumbly Buildings and a TESCO

... like kings, albeit kings living in a weird little hostel in an alleyway. We spent the evening exploring the old town- a section of Bratislava that is geared towards tourists, and that still retains its old-world flavour. Cobblestone streets and old architecture and statues and really expensive shops are everywhere. We checked out the Xmas markets and got some cheap dinner. They made these awesome fried chicken burgers, with onion and sweet mustard and ...
