May 11 (Sun) Up early, packed and down to Platform 8. The train to Bratislava left on schedule at 10:10. We had a very fancy compartment -- 6 seats all to ourselves. The scenery was nice and mellow -- farmland, a few little medieval towns sprinkled through out -- nice touch, God! We had a sandwich and split a beer on the train -- left us with only a buck in Hungarian. Bill got a cheese sandwich, I got ham -- then we mixed and matched for a ham and cheese -- clever us. We got to the Bratislava...
Bratislava, Slovakia billbambergerChlo found us a cheap three-star hotel in Bratislava through a Slovakian website, which described the hotel as “1970’s retro communist style”. We found the hotel to be everything described and more! The hotel was clearly tired, dated and featured original décor and fittings (including plastic flowers!). John felt like he had stepped back in time and was a character in a cold-war spy movie, so was constantly checking for hidden bugs and cameras. The hotel staff were friendly ...
Bratislava, Slovakia john_and_chloeWe arrived at Bratislava Airport late in the evening and took a taxi to the hotel near the city centre. I was impressed with how clean the city was. The city (or the parts I saw of it) didn't give me an impression it was dirty at all. Yes, there are grafitti in places but that seems to be constant in any european city or even the world for that matter. We stayed at Hotel Kyjev. This was a 15-story hotel and we had the convenience (I'm being sarcastic here) of staying on the 15th floor. Initia...

What does £4 get you?

A McDonald's Value Meal? A day ticket on the London Underground? Cost of two shots in a cheap pub? Total cost of a flight to Bratislava from London? Total cost of a flight from Krakow back to London?

And still you wonder how we can afford to travel so much?

So there you have it. Perusing Ryan Air one day, I noticed that seats were going for £4 a pop, and with a bit of looking ...
Bratislava, Bratislava, Slovakia darrenstravelsSlovakians in general are a young and hot people...or so we concluded after 24 hours in the country. We spent a single night in Bratislava...in a run-down Slovakian university dorm...but that didn't stop us from enjoying our time there.

The old town ...
Bratislava, Bratislava, Slovakia fisebDay 31 I was supposed to go to Bratislava on the 13th and since it was a lazy Saturday Julie and Michael offered to take me there by car (Austrians are really hospitable people!). They picked me up around 2:00 pm and about 50 minutes later we were strolling in Hainburg's tiny old city center (Hainburg is the last Austrian city before the border). More 20 minutes and we were parking the car at the center of Bratislava. After leaving my stuff at the hostel (Patio ...
Bratislava, Slovakia gbasilio... grounds of the castle, where the family was buried. We had lunch at the castle tavern, and good times were had by all :) The hills were absolutely gorgeous. We had perfect weather, I can't get over how blue the sky is here. Then we went to a cave (no pictures allowed, sorry) and took a tour through there for about an hour. It was very cool (literally) I think ...
Bratislava, Slovakia sehuling... going to pass through Bratislava, Devin castle is a must. Situated where the Danube meets some other river, this medieval ruin offers a phenomenal view (as tourguidey as i get). Nothing too exciting happened, didn't meet anyone overly interesting, so all in all - been there done that. AFTER NOTE: To top it off, I'm pretty sure my mattress was full of bed bugs. Now I'm covered in small bites. Sweet. Steer clear of Patio Hostel.
Bratislava, Slovakia johnabroad... the winding roads, towards Cesky Krumlov. We parked outside the old town, then dragged our bags across the cobblestone streets (clackety-clack, to the amusement of the many day-trippers) to our hotel on the river -- great location, with a great view of the castle on the hill. Walked around the old town and had dinner at a restaurant along the river; castle is lit for night; very impressive.
Bratislava, Slovakia ahartryHey, Its strange, but I'm in Slovakia at the moment. It seams like it is a really cool city that is undergoing a great period of change, it has just been elected into NATO and the EU, so they are becoming part of major Europe. Its an exciting place...but still looks like a war zone at the moment...see the photos. One of the funniest moments was when we were checking into out hostel...As we had finished and were ...
