What Happened in Spain Part II

... and then there was Shannon. She was actually the one of the first people I met here in Cordoba, and I remember I accidently called her by another name the day after I met her. That's definitely a mistake I haven't repeated!!! But lets see, a few groups of students ended up grouping together on the train since we were all headed towards the same destination. One word sums up the reason why Cadiz became such a popular destination amongst the ...

Day with the Host Family

So today we didn't have an excursion because we had our own private tour guides in Rachel's host family from three years ago. They met us at the pier and were so happy to see Rachel it was great! They took us on a walking tour of historic Cadiz and we had breakfast at one of their places they like and we had churros an coffee with milk. Loly knew everyone we walked by it seemed and although they spoke no English and we speak little Spanish we were ...

Sherry Tasting and the Andalusian Horses

Today was the second and last excursion we did through Holland America. Jacqui had wanted to see the Andalusian horse show, and we could also get in a sherry tasting with it!

First off was the tour of the Gonzales Byass winery. I'm not a big fan of the normal sherries, but I love the sweet sherries. And it was cheap. I got a ...

Dancing horses

We got up really early (for us vacationers). It was about 8:15am. We decided we would drive 2 hours to a city called Jerez de la Frontera to see the famous dancing horses of Jerez. The tour guide said it was worth the drive... We arrived to another city. Not as big as Seville, but a city nonetheless. Shae was super excited to see the dancing horses. The show started at noon and lasted 1.5 hours. Shae lasted about 20 minutes - which was pretty good for her ...

In Seville we discovered that Megg is a big fan of Lambrusco, so we managed to down 2 full bottles each that night - lots of fun singing along with the Hippies..

The hippies told us about another place to go to for a day trip, so we headed off to Conil for the day. It was a really nice town, popular with ...

Living on a cliff face was unique!

July 13-15

Monday was a road trip to get to our next stop, Arcos de la Frontera, but we took the indirect route, swooping down to Gibraltar and looping back up the Atlantic coast through windy Teneriffe.. The route took us through another valley dotted with white villages that spill down the mountainside. The towns were sometimes under defensive castles; there were Renaissance towers ...

The Cadiz carnaval

... streets at night. There might have been several million of the carnaval people in Cadiz that night, I think.

By the way, the most original and interesting costumes were of Lego; there were also a few people dressed up as Mario, the pope or Heineken bottles, but my personal best was a guy dressed up as Facebook. He was unbeatable.

Our train was scheduled for the evening, when it was already dark, and when the festival was actually about to begin. I ...

Cadiz: Malcontents and Poop, Still a Lovely Day

... not unless you see it from the daughter's side. Still, it is very compelling. I also got The Careful Use of Compliments by Alexander McCall Smith. I did not like his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency book (the one I read), but this is a different character, a philosopher, and has something to do with "the art world," so I'll give it a shot. And the third book is Jennifer Vandever's The Bronte Project, which also is about academics. I don't know if I've mentioned ...

Carnaval en Cádiz

... It is traditional to paint the face with lipstick as a humble substitute of a mask. It is easy to get involved in the fiesta even not knowing the language and to live the Carnival. On Saturday everyone wears a costume, which many times is related to the most polemical news. But the Carnival of Cádiz is famous mainly for the satirical groups called chirigotas, their music and their lyrics.

... knows of any flight deals, let me know.... :) I´m going to Tarrifa then Morocco next weekend with my roommates, and then to Sevilla, probably Madrid, then up to Paris. I´m REALLY trying to figure out how to make it to Helsinki, but it´s looking shady... I´m trying Pauliina!!! Ok, not going to write more until I´m on a more trustworthy computer....the ones in this cafe suck..... Until then...
