The Tour Begins

On Saturday my Gap adventure tour began. We headed to Evora, Portugal on the afternoon of May 8th. Evora is a sleepy little town in central Portugal. We walked through some of the medevil streets and admired the ruins of a roman forum which included a temple to Diana, we also explord a ghoulish church decorated with the bones of over 1000 bodies and enjoyed a sleep in a hotel room bed. Since I do not have much to dicuss about Evora I will take an opportunity to ...

... working the counter tried to call us a taxi with no luck, kept saying nata, nata which was a bit frustrating. Finally after 30 min. of trying to communicate with them we walk into town and knock on one of the taxi driver´s doors, said he would drive us back to Beja! So crisis avoided, we made it back 4 hours after we intended and had a cook-up with Alex and Jason...who were smart enough to take the early bus!!!

Portugal: Beaches, Beauty, Burglars

Soon after our last entry, we crossed the border into Portugal. Not far from the border lies the town of Viana do Castelo, our destination. We arrived prepared to camp. Our expectations were not high after our Pamplona eurotrash campsite. However, we were pleasantly surprised. We arrived to find a campsite filled with old growth pine trees, sand, wind-surfers, and kite boarders. Needless to say, they were there for the beach that was at the doorstep of the ...

... and they show movies on the trips too. but tonight marks my last night here in portugal. i've been roped into doing the pubcrawl at the hostel tonight, so yet another interesting flight lies ahead. speaking of which, the air traffic controller's strike has apparently been called off! (i'm actually kinda disappointed about that).

Enchanting...yet Eerie Evora

An early morning, at least for us, and we were on our way by train about 2 hours outside of Lisbon to the Alentejo region of Portugal and the town of Evora, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our way to Evora we passed through groves of Cork trees. You will see from the photos - albeit taken from a moving train - a little bit about the Cork tree. You can see where the trunks are red in color - this is where the cork has been harvested. I believe it needs ...

... 1995 Lonely Planet that it was the most preserved walled city in Portugal, and all we saw was part of the walls and an Ossuary that was impressive. But along the way, whilst Lucy slept, I saw loads of walled cities and for all these years, I've threatened to come back, but never have, well at least until now. Evora From Merida, it is only 80 odd K's to the border, so we knew it was time to let Portugal back in on the Uncle Davros secret. I was also still carrying that old ...

... off season and there weren´t too many. I can´t imagine visiting a place like this in the high season. After one night there, which surprisingly was enough, we grabbed another bus and headed to the Algarve, the south Atlantic coast that brings hoardes and hoardes of norther European tourists to its laid back beaches. We took the advice of the Dutch women again and Deanne wrote down 2 recommended spots. We chose one that was towards the Spanish border: Tavira.

what port is this?

... Friday's and was like "sweet!"...but then I looked at the menu and they had no sandwiches. :( I found an Irish pub nearby for bar food. I picked up an apple and a banana at a store this afternoon. That'll get me some nutrients. I finished my third book while at the beach in Salema. Now I have to see if I can find somewhere with English language books. I was hoping to find a Borders or another big bookstore in Lisboa, but only found small ones ...

Evora

... Evora was easy enough. Finding our hotel...not so easy. What's with us today and this relentless hide & seek driving? It took an hour driving around in Evora to find our hotel. We were in the right area the whole time...circling the place because it wasn't labeled, nor were the streets. It was way too appropriate when U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" came on the radio. So, simply posh, little room #207 at Solar Monfalim...high stucco'd walls and a ...
