    Our guides around the onsen spoke little English, but were very funny as they shooed us around and pointed to paragraphs on our translated pamphlet.

    ... we followed some signs which took us off up a steep hill which was hell on our ****** bikes. On our way up we were stopped by a group of older Japanese people under a shelter on the side of the road. They gave us these little packs and asked us to say thank you at this little altar. The pack had rice snacks, cakes and sweets - amazing! They were really excited by us and asked us to sit down and tried to talk to us. They were very sweet but we didn't have much time so ...

    ... shrine) which has a long history of Shinto and Buddhist worship together. It also had hundreds of steps to get to the top.

    We ended the day with a walk into Dogo Park, which has some ruins of Yuzuki Castle, but is basically a lovely park with flowery bushes and shady trees, an old moat which is covered in water lilies and full of carp and turtles.

    The old railway station is now the tram terminus and we enjoyed a pleasant trip back to our hotel.

    WE DID: - visited Matsuyama-jo (castle), using the chairlift (no safety bar!) to get up and down the hill. - took the tram to Dogo Onsen where we booked in to Dogo Onsen Honkan baths with a private lounging room, yukata hire and imperial bath etc - walked through Dogo-koen (park). - walked to and around Ishite-ji (temple) - played in the arcade in Okaido. - went for a drink in bar Grace ...
