... in Victorian and Tudor buildings that house a fantastic collection of shops. The origin of the Rows is a little unclear, but it is believed that as the Roman walls slowly crumbled, medieval traders built their shops against the resulting rubble banks, while later arrivals built theirs on top. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours just wandering the streets and taking in the sights.

... where we boarded a steam train for a ride into Haverthwaite. Back on the bus and on to the M6 down to the ancient roman walled city of Chester. Had a stroll around here for an hour and half and couldn't resist a Pork Pie from a local bakery.

... like I was in Panama again. The room had a climate to it, warm and humid, and tropical birds could fly around where they wanted. Near this was a butterfly room with hundreds of butterflies fluttering around us. One of them let us pick it up, but after we realized this was a bad idea when it wouldn't get off our hand, and there were signs saying don't touch any butterflies. Oops. ... know there wasn't any health and safety reps in those days !!

After a long day walking about we stopped at The Falcon, a lovely pub that had originally been a house back in about 1200, and had been part of the rows at one stage and has since been re built over the years... but is now this delightful little pub, where Stewart and I enjoyed a little light refreshment before we headed out to The Slug and Lettuce for dinner!
