Wells

... lose permanent feeling in my feet. It seemed impossible to get warm. We went to Wells Golf Club for lunch, then said goodbye to Graham and Christine, before heading home to get changed for our family photo shoot. We all 'frocked up' and drove over to just past Meare to have some family portraits taken. Am excited to see how they turn out. Quiet night in tonight playing Rummikub, and pizza for dinner. Both Jen and Jonah are poorly with colds so they had an early ...

Nicky's 40th in Bath

... the bus in and went to Bath Thermal Spa. We met Christine (Jen's old friend) and her daughters Sharon & Sarah as well. There were four floors you could use and we started with the rooftop pool. It was soooooo warm. It was like a spa. But when you first stripped off, the pavers were absolutely freezing, so you had to rush on tiptoes to get into the water to get warm. Next was the third floor which offered spa treatments, but none of us had anything. ...

Weston-Super-Mare

... today. Hands needed gloves, and heads needed hats. We found respite in a greasy spoon for lunch, then walked back along the beach and picked up some local fudge and toffee for gifts. It's funny how the ocean is about half a kilometre from the shore. And it's not called Weston Super Mud for no reason! On the way home we called in to Garden World where the ...

Glastonbury & Shepton Mallet

A travel blog entry by the_eads

Steve and I went for a run this morning (7.30km). It's funny having three layers on, with long tights, gloves and a hat. Very pleasant out running in the fresh winter air. We ran past a few people as we went along (said good morning etc), then Steve found out later in the day (when he was at the pub) that someone he used to know years ago had seen us and recognised him. After breakfast, Jen and I took Kendra & Abigail over to the Village for a ...

Historical Traveler Reviews BEST WESTERN Abbey Hotel Bath

    Great location, adequate hotel

    from anonymous

On a recent visit to Bath (for a wedding), my boyfriend and I stayed at the Abbey Hotel. Its location is terrific - could not be better for access to all the highlights of Bath and just down the street (walkable) from the train station. The hotel itself is typical of Best Western hotels - a solid three stars. The room and bath were clean, the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast no worse than most three-star hotels. We experienced no issues with noise, despite the fact that our room sat on the stairwell and overlooked a busy walkway. Given the expense of most hotels in Bath, I would not hesitate to stay again.

    Room Without a View !!

    from anonymous

Having booked a single night stay on the basis that the room booked had an excellent view. I arrived with my wife to find that the excellent view was a wall, drainpipe and pigeon netting with dubious material on it. No other rooms were available and we were not offered any alternative hotel or discount - we did not stay - the evening was ruined - I will not use Best Western ever again.

    Not a great choice

    from perthwa

We stayed here for 3 nights mid May 2004.Would not choose to stay there again, this was a last chance hotel, as everywhere was booked out. It was very hot in Bath, our room was on the 3rd floor at the back, very noisy about 4am from a restaurant being cleaned, the bedroom and bathroom window had to be propped open with a wooden coathanger! Room was small, bathroom OK, breakfast what can I say? Tea bag string and end of tea bag (label) left in the tea pot - yuk, having stayed in Bath before we were looking forward to returning, unfortunately we were disappointed this time, the best place to eat was the Fish Works!

The hotel is very close to the river and in an excellant location for exploring Bath on foot. There is a pay and display car park close to the hotel but car park fee is not included in the hotel price. The hotel is warm and clean, the bedroom was a well presented, and had a good size bathroom. The lounge area is comfortable and it has newspapers provided for those interested. Breakfast was included in the price and it sets you up for a good days shopping......I would use the hotel again.

    It was pretty average...

    from anonymous

This hotel was booked through a tour company. This hotel had it's good points, and bad... It was clean and very simple - No frills. The location was excellent. Through our tour company, both dinner and breakfast was booked for us, to be had in the hotel restaurant. As the hotel restaurant is closed at night (??), we had our dinner on plates our laps in the lounge area. Although the meal was nice, the situation was not very glamorous. Breakfast was also interesting - In the restaurant this time but they managed to get the order incorrect 3 times. To top it off, on check-out, they tried to charge us for wine that we never had. They did, however, correct the charge as soon as we contested it. Overall, 5/10 max.

    A very nice stay

    from PleaseDont

I stayed at the Abbey in March 2004. The room was a good size, the bathroom huge. The furnishings were modest but comfortable. The room and bathroom were both well-heated (it was very cold when I was in Bath). I forgot that breakfast was included, and slept too late in any case, but the restaurant looked pretty good. There is a nice little sitting room in the lobby with a bar that serves drinks and espresso. I understand from the friend I was visiting in Bath that the front rooms can be a bit noisy because the hotel is located on a traffic circle. Mine was in the back and very quiet. The location is great--short walking distance from the train station, very close to the Abbey and Roman Baths and other places of interest. I would stay here again, especially at the modest internet price (about $130). Also highly recommend the Fish Works restaurant and fishmonger on Green Street (a short walk--but so is everything in Bath). Really terrific food. Closed on Mondays (naturally).

    Right about what I'd expect

    from spoons

We stayed at the BW Abbey in Bath as the first hotel on our 10-day trip to the UK. The location was perfect -- just a block or so to the Roman Baths. The rooms are about average for a European hotel -- which, if you're an American used to Hiltons, will be an adjustment. The rooms were clean, and everything was in working order. The only thing I would like to see improved would be the sound proofing of the windows. As this is an exisiting (read: older) building, this is not an unusual trait, but the streetnoise (for those on the front of the bulding) or the cry of the seagulls (for those on the courtyard) was louder than you might like to see. There is very little parking immediately in front the hotel, but there is a car park about a block-and-a-half away (it was ?10 for a 24-hour period). The location was perfect, the rooms were clean, and the price was right, so I would recommend this to others. But you might consider packing a pair of earplugs. :)

    Bath isn't great????

    from anonymous

So you don't think Bath is great? don't know what you did but you missed a lot!

As for the Abbey Hotel, this was average price for the UK (particularly on Valentine weekend) but we had a great time, a very comfortable clean room, excellent facilities and good food.

Central, close to loads of restaurants, it's only problem was lack of private parking and inability to check in before 1430 :-(

    Bath isn't great

    from helmutschlurper

hotel was alright by english standards. very difficult to get a room at the weekend so people will take anything. as a result, hotel service and facilities in bath hotels tend to be basic - just enough to keep the customers from leaving in disgust. don't expect too much and your stay will be more enjoyable.

    What a pit

    from anonymous

What a mistake staying at the Abby Hotel. My preferred choice was booked, so on an internet recommendation, I pre-booked here. When they say the rooms aren't ready until three, they really mean it. But you can wait in the lounge and purchace coffee or tea. The porter won't carry your bag, but he'll sell you drinks. The lift was out of order, but had no sign. You just wait until someone happens by and tells you. When I got to my room (that had no airconditioning during the heatwave), the carpet was crusty, the bedspread had odd stains and the mattress was broken down; ridges on edges and down center with deep ditches and springs in the two valleys. Doesn't the management check these things?I should have checked out immediatly but had pre-paid thru an internet service and didn't have the extra funds to pay twice for one night. So, I stripped the covers from bed, put all the towels on the mattress in an effort to insulate from strings, and any crawly things in the old bed, went out and bought a sheet to lay on top of the towels and covered up with my clothes. Just thinking about it makes me itch.

After a hot and stuffy night, the garbage truck woke me bright and early the next morning. I couldn't get out fast enough.
