    ... including dips. Had a dip of my own, putting my feeting in the water, atter some olives and cheese. One did get a sense of the history of the place. Lydia was the first documented convert to Christianity on European soil.

    The interior of the church is simply stunning. It is freshly completed but maintained that stilted look to the depictions so typical of medieval frescoes. Waiting to leave, it was euros out and Bulgarian levs in. We left at 1215.

    ... in the highlands to see an awesome alpine lake. It was actually a trudge through the snow, sometimes up to our knees, to a tiny ice-covered body of water at the top called Mt Okoto, or the Eyeball, because it looked....errr...like an eyeball. Even though no one was really clad for the walking conditions, it was a beautiful walk in the mountains, breathing in the fresh air and soaking up the alpine views.

    ... to feed each bear so if anyone's interested, their website is www.vier-pfoten.bg (four paws) Once they had been brought to the sanctuary, they were put into these really large fenced off areas in native forest, designed to replicate their original environment. The bears who were here looked pretty happy, although some of them still had the whole dancing bear routine going along and would shuffle side to side for 5 minutes at a time as we watched. Very sad ...

    ... our walk about. Death Notices. Not placed in the local paper as we do, but rather, printed A4 sheets of paper, laminated and pinned on buildings all about the town. Sometimes with a black bow. We understand that these notices can stay up for years.
