Tokyo

Sunday 4th of May Alison: We had thought about going to Mt Fuji on Sunday before flying out to Canada on Monday evening, but as it turned out, Japan had been given the Monday as a public holiday in recompense for the actual holiday falling on the Saturday, so the whole region was full of Japanese celebrating their important Golden Week holiday season. Finally reaching Odowara, Michael went to a tourist bureau who explained that with the place overrun with tourists we would be unable to explo...

Japan!

Konnichiwa! We only left my Mum and Dad 19 hours ago but we are now in our hotel room in Tokyo. We are in an upgraded room on the 29th floor (with free internet !)... its pretty amazing. I managed to sleep for a few hours on the plane but still will probably go to bed in a few hours (its 4:30am liverpool time and 12:30noon tokyo time) and sleep right through until tomorrow morning. Going on a trip to Mt Fuji tomorrow so want to be refreshed for that !! Oh and when we were flying into Japan we...

Mt Fuji and Hakone trip

Hey, Today has been a very long day ! Took a day tour to Mt Fuji and Mt Komagatake in Hakone. The tour guide, Harry, was really good and told us loads of information about Japan and Japanese culture throughout the day. One thing I noticed, I remember reading a quote recently that goes something along the lines of; 'Travellers see what they see, tourists see what they came to see', and when we were on the coach on the way to Mt Fuji, we were passing through Tokyo itself then through countrysid...

In Tokyo

... train to Asakusa. We went to this great restaurant and I had Tempura! it was fish and rice with lovely batter all over it. It was my best lunch I had ever tasted. For desert I had some fresh fruit (kiwi fruit, orange and strawberries.) Alison: After eating yummy tempura we then wandered around the temples of Asakusa and then caught the ferry back along the river to Hinode Pier, near our hotel. That evening ...

Fish, water, temples and robots (i.e. tokyo)

... to say, we knew the temples were going to be impressive as we passed under the largest lantern i've ever seen suspended from the main archways into the complex (photo op. again obviously!). Even the avenue of opportunisitic stalls glistening in the sun on the run upto the temples was impressive and tempting...Si, not so swayed by all the goodies, kept the pace and the money in my wallet! Then finally nearing the centre an american tourist, who we'd met repeatedly ...

Arrival to Tokyo...

... Once we got to our stop there were 4 exits all numbered we chose the one closest to us and vualah we were back on the surface. It looked pretty cool but very calm compared to what I had seen on TV. A shopkeeper saw us looking in all sorts of directions because I was looking for a river, since to get to this place had turned into pictionary from here because the map we had did not have street names but instead it was just a picture map with a star at where we needed to ...

Earthquake! and retreat at Kuriazawa

... though, so I was very confused. And pretty soon the entire house started to rattle and shake a bit. I was quite groggy, like I said, so my first thought was, "Who is shaking the house?" And a vision of some sort of giant creature entered my head, as though that were actually realistic. Then I wondered why the house was shaking, as if our home would have suddenly decided to dance a little jig. And finally the idea occurred to me that this was ...

Speeding forward but looking back

... arose, we figured, would take a lifetime. What was clear to us was that in Japan everyone and everything had its proper place and proper purpose and that the worst crime that could be committed against this well defined structure was to go too strongly against the grain. Not wanting to go to far beyond the norm ourselves, we opted to spend our last night in the city in a capsule hotel. One of the predictable byproducts of a city that has so many people living so far away from the ...

Phil in Kitty Land

... in for flavor. I visited the gift shop. Yup, they had almost everything under the sun imprinted with some type of Sanrio Character. In the restaurant, they had box lunches and deserts shaped like Kitty. A stand off to the side was offering Visa and Mastercards with Hello Kitty on them. I could only shake my head and walk away....but not before I bought a dozen cell phone danglers.... ----------------------------- I was kind of ...
