      ... He also recommended that we go to a place called Rosie's for breakfast. We arrived at Rosie's to find that it was actually closed until 10 so we went back and checked out the park we had passed and found a giant church before returning to get some food. Breakfast here is pretty weird. You tend to order jams, cheeses, or meat and it comes with rolls to put it on.       ... on the backs of the steel and coalmining industry and the Ruhr was at the forefront of the economic boom. When it ended in the early 90’s, coal production collapsed and the mines closed, leading to mass unemployment from which Gelsenkirchen has yet to fully recover. It remains a depressing area to be in and I’m not saying anything new here, the Germans know it too.

      ... too many Euro coins is a more common problem (one I now have), given I only bought one thing all day I had nothing of the sort. Fortunately someone made change for me and I was told to get a ticket at a machine that was found to be broken. Eventually I sat back down and handed another attendant the coins, but this was not the start I was looking for. Hopefully my public transportation skills improve as the trip goes on...as well as my interactions with Germans! ;-)
