... just a little village. So immigrants have played a major role in making this the city as it is, and I must say that, although of course there’s not much here for tourists to see, it is a very decent looking place to live. I ponder on this as I sit in a corridor next to a plaza shaded by vines, watching Spanish and African boys play football together. Across the street men in djellabas head to a discreet mosque somewhere. No Islamic call to prayer echoing across the ...

The next day was even worse on the anchorage front. We were planning on having a fairly short day, so we left late, only to find that the spot we'd selected was right behind a headland with 20 knots of wind gusting around it, straight into us.

This was clearly unsuitable, but the nearest marina was 26 miles away and we'd struggle to get there before dark. Still, we ...

One thing that does strike us in Europe and on this ship is the lack of hats worn by anyone – except Aussie tourists. Akubras and shady hats seem to be a natural part of the inventory for Australians but very few others, tourists and locals alike, seem to imbibe. It is a weaker sun but the constant exposure must have an effect on them over time.
