The hills are alive, with the sound of Danny

So after a 6 hour train ride, and a fewtense moments in small town where we transferee trains we made it. Small town train station in the middle of czech is not where you want to be. One of the few times in my life that if you asked me to point to a map and tell you were I was I wouldn't be able to. I emailed my parents from a strange public computer just in case. You know, so they would have a starting point for when we went missing. It really was that sketchy. Lights were al off and people ...

Loved this Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here with my girlfriend for 2 nights. We had a double room with a huge bed and the room was immaculately decorated. The bathroom was lovely too with a powerful shower. The room was very clean. The staff were all very friendly and the breakfast had a range of cereal, breads and meat to cater for all tastes. The hotel is about 2 minutes walk to the train station and about 10 mins walk to the old town / castle. I picked this hotel as it got really good reviews on this website. I will definitely stay here again.

Great location, breakfast & staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I visited Salzburg for 3 days and were very pleased with the quality and location of this hotel. The rooms are very quiet and the breakfast buffet is one of the best we have enjoyed. The centre of town is a pleasant 10 minute stroll along the beautiful riverside. The staff were all very helpful and friendly.

We will definitely stay there again.

Nice hotel and close to the train station

from detraveler_7
We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Zum Hirschen in May 2004. The location was good for us since we arrived and departed by train. We wanted to be close to the station since we had a 7 am departure from Salzburg. It was an easy walk to the historic area mostly through the Mirabell Gardens which were lovely. The staff was very nice and the rooms were good. The breakfast buffet was still being set up when we ate since it was before their opening time but they were very nice to accomodate us early. I suspect the breakfast would have been better if we were able to wait but it was quite good anyway.

Best 4-star in Town!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This family run hotel is the best bargain in Austria! They have so much to offer their guests: Large, well appointed double rooms (don't get me started on the goose-down comforters), huge breakfast buffet(with champagne for mimosas!), a roof-top sauna (if you want a steam and a massage), good location (short walk to the train station or Old Town), something they call a bio-restaurant which uses all organic products and cooks up some tasty traditional Austrian dishes, and a friendly, multi-lingual staff to point you in all the right directions. The owners, Franz and Rossi Wallman, made me feel like part of the family.

So this "cousin" will be staying here, hopefully, many times in the future!

... as an excellent city hotel with plentiful parking and within easy walking distance of the main train station for quick and cheap weekend travel to Munich. We were grateful to the staff for explaining this to us as we took full advantage of it and had a great day out. The Zum Hirschen's pretty garden was much appreciated after a long days' sightseeing. Excellent and comfortable beds - much appreciated after a long days' sightseeing. Fabulous buffet breakfast - much appreciated before a long days' sightseeing. Staff were welcoming and efficient - much appreciated before and after a long days' sightseeing! We are looking forward to staying there again soon.

Excellent accomodations and location

from A TripAdvisor Member
If you are traveling to Salzburg and looking for excellent accomodations, great location and a professional, friendly staff then look no further. The Zum Hirschen provides all of these and more. We have been staying at the Zum Hirschen since 1986 and enjoyed each visit. The restaurant is excellent with traditional Austrian dishes and great desserts! A short walk from the hotel takes you to the main train station or bus terminal. In minutes one can easily walk to the Mirabel Gardens, the old town section or a beautiful stroll down the Salzach River. There is plenty of free parking and a bier garden to top off a pleasant day in the Austrian Alps. The Wallman's are excellent hosts and have always made everyone I know who has visited feel right at home. I have traveled a great deal and this is my favorite place of all! There are many hotels in the area with Hirschen in the name. Make certain your stay is at the Hotel Zum Hirschen on St. Julian Strasse.

Rude staff

from maxineLeeds
i stayed in this hotel over new year and christmas the staff were very rude and evan accusded my family of stealing silver wear from room service and searched my things only not to find it yet gave no appology and constantly gave us the cold shoulder for the rest of the holiday.talking to other guests it turned out other english guests wre given the same treatment. i would not recomend this hotel to anyone and i had friends in nearby cheaper 4* of much higher quailty the only good thing was the food which was great its a shame about the staff. i was told on my last day by the cleaner that the missing article was found.

Central and quiet, the Zum Hirschen is a great lodging option in Salzburg

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is probably the best option if you come to Salzburg by car. It is easy to reach from the motorway, has free parking for its guests and is at walking distance from all sites of interest. But above all, this is a great family run hotel. Rooms are spacious (mine has a huge marble bathroom) with every amenities you can expect from a Best Western Hotel in Europe, quiet (very efficient sound-proofed windows), air-conditionned and tastefully decored in traditionnal style. A substantial breakfast is included in every rate. At an average rate of 115 Euros/night in late June, this hotel was a real bargain. I would definitely stay here again.

An excellent place, away from the crowds

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is listed as expensive, but we found the price to be excellent when taken into consideration with the service.

The hotel is across the river and diagonally located from the old walled city. It is very easy to find and they have good parking. The front desk staff was very attentive to our needs, arranging a tour for us and having us picked up at the hotel as well as helping us understand the Salzburg cards we recieved.

The hotel is actually two blocks from the central train and tram station, which is excellent as you can go there and then catch trams to various sites around Salzburg, including the walled city, the fortress and for buses that will take you to sites just outside the city.

There is a bank with an ATM right across the street and a nice shopping center is a block north of the hotel.

As to the staff and accomodations, I have nothing but the best. They made us feel at home, and were attentive to our every need. The food at the restaurant was delicious, no one needs to be put off by the bio rating of the restaurant. Breakfast was plentiful with many choices including champagne, fresh fruit and yogart as well as breads, cereals, meats and cheeses.

The rooms were appointed with typical austrian furniture and was of good quality. The bathrooms were spacious and bathing facilities were generous.

We loved this hotel and plan on returning the next time we are in Salzburg. I recommend it to anyone that wants to stay away from the noise or extra expense of staying in the old walled city, which we found to be crowded and noisy late into the evenings.
