Today, Friday, we had another great drive. We left Austin, Nevada by nine AM and had only about a hundred and fifty miles to travel. We moved lower and lower until now we're at about 4,400 above sea level. It's about seventy degrees here and feels great. Enroute we stopped at Petroglyph Site which was started by the Cattail People. The oldest petroglyph is about 8,000 years on up to 500 years ago. But, who's ...

Heading back to our room we were walking through the casino on the way to our rooms and found Dave getting more money out of an ATM machine. I walked up behind him and said "Sir this ATM doesn’t work.” It took him a couple of seconds to realize it was

      Day 42 - 5/18/2014
19 miles to a windy low pine campsite. (577.5)

Today was our first day into the Southern tip of the Sierras. We are carrying 8 days of food and 2 days of water. We are supposed to hit a trickle of a spring tomorrow. We hope to each get a couple liters there. After a couple days of higher elevation we dip back down into the Mojave for one last hurrah. After that it's a steady climb up to Kennedy Meadows. And onward to Forester Pass at 13,000 feet. Hah! I'm so ...

... down to the lakeshore again. The wind was strong and the water icy cold as we dipped out toes. Pretty though Lake Tahoe is, its resorts are haphazard and too commercial. With too many private homes the waterfront is almost ignored. Where were the boardwalk, the cafés and deck chairs?! We went to see a movie ('Prisoners' with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall - 3/5)' crashed out, then had an enormous steak, washed down with a Francis Ford Coppola Pinot ...

... that about 10 miles of the trail was dry and this greatly slowed us down.
We talked a lot about life, friends, and economics before coming up upon 3 day hikers who missed there turn and were 3 miles off course with empty water bottles. It made me feel less stupid for all the things we forgot haha.
We walked to a water source with them and purified some water and then they looked reinvigorated.
Our clock was ticking though with no headlamps, we had 4 hours left to summit ...
