When we entered Dunedin we had a campsite we wanted to stay at so tried to find it, we ended up driving round a peninsula for ages- there was no way of turnign around as the road was too narrow and the sea was right next to the road! It was a bit like Dartmouth or somewhere in Devon! We finally found a layby thing where we turned around and drove back at snails pace. We found a campsite on the edge of the town. set in hills and with ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand nicowala... off in the room and he was in the kitchen making his lunch. With the backpack on. He didn't take it off for three days. On that first occasion I introduced myself and shook his hand and after he offered the sock in a cup limp handshake he asked me about my travels. I answered and said “sorry, what was your name?” and he asked me another question to avoid giving his name. But over the two days I stayed in Te Anau he turned out to be a really nice ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand dantheeducator... largest city in the South Island and as the name suggests it owes it existence to the Scots, much of it was built during the height of a gold so the buildings have a lot of grandeur.
Now it is very much a University city, not that Otago University is any larger than others but the percentage of population that is associated with the University makes it central to things.
The Southern Cross Scenic Circle Hotel is centrally located ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand iquaff... not every square km of NZ is stunning - a reality check! We take a walk to the centre then across to the University area - some lovely old buildings house various faculties. We notice a sign advertising uni facilities including "queer support". Strange how the use of language can be so different in a seemingly similar country to the UK! We browse in the Uni bookshop and find a Spanish dictionary and phrase book - more exciting than it sounds. We ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand joelroseHello again, have got to the east coast after a bit of driving and have found some free internet access in Dunedin Library whilst it's raining outside and the surf is messy from some strong onshores. The luge on the mountain above Queenstown was very fun with a second run having to be made as we were allowed to graduate to the advanced track after a first trial on the scenic track! The Bungy jump was awesome as it was a nice sunny day and the waist deep ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand jonnyw... and are then met by a guide who takes you through the factory - we saw chocolates being made, but others didn't as they went later in the day when the machines were being cleaned. You do get chocolates on the way, plus the shop has really cheap chocolate, so we indulged. You can't take in any bags, and have to take jewellery off - it's all stored in a locked cupboard for the duration of the tour. I have to say though, that the service ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand mkconway... Things we don't love; vodafone, ring-bound travel journals, slow mail deliveries. What we will miss; our loved ones, regular feeds of curry, RBC, beautiful Dunedin, normality/routine (just kidding!), and a variety of clean clothes. What we are looking forward to; much falafel, the desert, ancient wonders, wild animals (close, but not TOO close), and making a difference, we hope.
Dunedin, New Zealand smof... a pizza restaurant (apparently the best one in town) that is just 5 minutes walking distance from our house and the earliest he ever starts is noon. But thus are the downsides of working while traveling - you can't always get what you want. So that's the latest update for now. Once we manage to save a bit of money we're going to invest in a cheap car and we'll be out adventuring more often so the blogs will be more interesting.
Dunedin, New Zealand jasi... in-out return road to Mount Cook. Despite the weather being good to us and giving great views and varying colours across the landscape the main attraction, Mt. Cook, was covered at the peak by a layer of cloud that would not go away! However, we could see the bluer colour in the snow and ice showing the glaciers that retreat up the side of the mountains. We continued on to Omarara for an overnight stop. As we drove into the 'town' we felt like ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand clairechris2008... us to a magnificent display of flying at sunset, and the tross-cam shows the fat fluffy chicks waiting to be fed. Andy had a serious Monty Python moment...

Other highlights in Dunedin included the Botanic Gardens, the splendid university and station buildings, and the world's steepest street, more than 1 in 3 straight up. I also spent an entertaining afternoon in the museum, learning the history of 'New Edinburgh' and admiring an eclectic transport ...
