typical tourist trip

Was with my then wife at the time. Did loads of obligitory tourist waffle really.
One of the best times we had there was, we went to statton island. There was literally nothing to do there. We walked into the first bar we found and was greeted by possibly the friendlist locals ever. They found out we were newly weds and made us loads of cocktails and free lunch. Amazing peeps.

LA Wrap Up

Hi La wrap up: 2 crazy nights out courtesy of Rob and his cronies Lots of shopping - purchases included 1 pair of Jeans, 2 pairs of pants, 3 T-Shirts, 1 Jacket, 1 cardigan, 1 pair of pyjamas, 7 CDs, 2 DVDs, 7" Vinyl singles. Quite a good haul overall! About 100 kms of walking! Celebrity spotting included Ron Jeremy, an Olsen twin and possibly Jessica Simpson and a Veronica. Many visits to the 101 cafe next to the hotel. 2 Mexican restaurants (Paul still working on that burrito) and many LA ho...

The City That Never Sleeps And Neither Do We!

Hi Oh goodness! We can't quite get this sleeping thing right! Up again at 3am...AARRRGGGHHH. Yesterday was a quick day due to the time difference - left LA at 8.45am and arrived in New York 5 hours later at 5pm. We had a great flight with JetBlue - good airline - very friendly - loads of legroom. Free snacks and drinks and TV in every seat. Oh, our taxi driver in LA started taking us to LAX - we were leaving from Burbank - in the opposite direction - good thing we are cluey and knew where we ...

Walking, Walking and More Walking

Hi Very tired today due to lots of walking. Trekked around Mid Town and visited the Grand Central Terminal, Chrysler and Empire State buildings, Byrant Park, Madison Park, Flatiron Building, Chelsea Hotel, Radio City Music Hall and the Rockefeller Centre. Very cold (4- 7 degrees) and a little rainy. It is supposed to rain tomorrow so we are going to do some museums. That's all for now. Love Carolyn and Paul

USS Intrepid, Seinfeld Diner and Central Park

Today we visited the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum on a decommissioned aircraft carrier. Very interesting and informative. There are exhibits and you get to explore the ship. They also have one of the British Airways Concords which was quite interesting also. It is very small inside. We planned to visit the Museum of Natural History but the Dinosaur level was closed so we will go another day. Instead, we wandered around Central Park and saw Strawberry Fields, the ice skating rink, and ab...

East Village Rock N Roll

Today was very, very cold! Only 5 degrees and a cold wind blowing. Brrrrrrrr! We went to Union Square, SOHO and the East Village which was the site of our Rock Junket walking tour which was very cool although someone has stolen the Joey Ramone Place sign - again - Boo Hoo. We saw such sites as Joey Ramone, Iggy Pop and Madonna's former homes, the buildings featured on the Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti cover, Manitoba's bar and the old CBGB's site plus much more. We then headed down to SOHO a...

Top Of The Rock!

Hi We had an action packed Friday the 13th... In the morning we went to the American Museum Of Natural History - there were about a million school kids but only half of them were screaming so it wasn't so bad. We saw the dinosaurs and loads of other exhibits including the space show at the planetarium. Next stop was another visit to the East Village where we checked out the shops along St Marks Place - Paul bought a new ring - we then went and had a drink in Manitoba's Bar (singer from The Di...

Brooklyn Bridge and Jack's Arrival!

Today we left a little later and headed to Lower Manhattan to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a nice day today; top of 12 degrees. Picked up some lunch at a little deli type store and ate it in the park between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. A little chilly but very nice view. Took a heap of pictures and checked the mobile to find out we have a new Nephew named Jack. Very exciting news indeed! Can't wait to meet him when we get home. We went to Central Park to buy a CBGB's print ...

Happy Anniversary To Us!

Today is our first anniversary! One year has passed since our brilliant wedding day... Today we went to see the Statue Of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum on the ferry. Not the best day weather wise - very overcast and hazy. Very interesting though and worth the trip. We then visited the Skyscraper museum which was a bit disappointing - you can't always believe what Lonely Planet says! We also wandered by ground zero and the massive construction site for the new buildings. Caro...

Historical Traveler Reviews of 414 Hotel New York City

Best-kept secret in NY

from A TripAdvisor Member
After doing a lot of research for a nice, affordable, clean, conveniently located hotel in NYC, I finally decided on 414 Inn. We were more than impressed! The location was on a pleasant street and there were a lot of restaurants and bars nearby. The hotel itself was very well appointed, especially for the price we paid. The room was pretty spacious by NY standards and the the decor tasteful and modern. The people at the front desk were very nice and helpful as well. The best thing about the hotel was the cost. We were able to get a discount from the hotel's website. We will defintely will stay at 414 the next time we're in NY.

Superb B&B in NYC

from A TripAdvisor Member
Staying at the 414 Inn was a pleasant experience from the moment I made my reservations online. We received an e-mail as well as a courtesy phone call from the staff before our visit.

The hotel is located on 46th Street, a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of Midtown Manhattan. Tucked away in the middle of 'Restaurant Row', it's just short walk to Times Square.

Rooms at the 414 Inn have a European flair and look similar to what you may find in a local NYC apartment. The room was clean, well appointed, and stylishly decorated. The bathroom was large, bright and had plenty of clean towels and hot water.

414 Inn provides a wonderful continental breakfast of fresh muffins, danishes, coffee, fruit and cereal each morning. You have the option of eating in at tables in their comfy lobby, or in their lovely outdoor courtyard. The staff were kind, friendly and willing to provide guests with assistance.

We enthusiastically recommend the 414. For what you get, for what you're paying, you'd be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck anywhere else in NYC.

Great Hotel, Great Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I hadn't been to NYC since I was a kid, and I booked the 414 Inn on line not knowing what to expect. I was worried about a small, loud room in a bad neighborhood. What we found was anything but. The room was well-priced, a good size, and in a fantastic neighborhood, close to lots of restaurants and a few minutes walk from Times Square and many theaters. The rooms were clean, stylish, and very comfortable. The staff was outstanding--both friendly and helpful--and the contintental breakfast was perfect to get us going in the morning. We were thrilled with our hotel find--for price, convenience, and overall quality. I will never stay anywhere else in New York!

Loved the friendly staff and great location

We had a great time at this hotel/inn. The rooms are spacious and very very clean. It was surprising to find such a "boutique" hotel in the heart of Manhattan. We arrived early and the check in time is usually at 3PM at hotels and since the room was ready they showed us right to our room! The 22 room inn is surrounded by restaurants and the friendly staff makes sure your stay is comfortable. We took brochures and will be soon and so will our friends.

Would Never Stay Again

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the 414 Inn 1/8/04 -1/11/04 and were extremely disappointed. The first room we were put in did not have a lock that led directly to the fire escape down to the street. We advised management of this and were told that there were "sensors" and we had nothing to worry about. Not satisfied with this story we later approached a different manager who was happy to move us to another room. However, there was just one problem: the heat DID NOT WORK. Once again we complained and were offered a room with twin beds. This was not what we requested, nor what we were billed for. So, we toughed it out with a small space heater and 10 degree temperatures outside. In addition, the hotel misadvertised for there are not hairdryers in the rooms, irons, the muffins and bagels were stale, and worst yet their idea of a king size bed was literally two twin beds pushed together with king size coverings. Upon checkout the front desk lady was extremely rude and treated us like we were inconviencing her by trying to hand in our keys. I would not stay at the 414 Inn again and do not recommend to any other traveler visiting NY.

Very pleased

from A TripAdvisor Member
After considering many hotels (drove my husband crazy in fact), I booked the 414 based on the internet reviews; we were not dissapointed.

The inn is super clean and nicely furnished, not dated by any means. My only suggestion to those thinking of staying here would be to request a room in the back building. We had a street facing room in the front building and it was pretty loud in the morning hours. Other than that, I would definitely stay here again. Great midtown location, cozy lobby and nice breakfast.

A pleasant place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
The 414 Inn on West 46th Street is a good find - it is a small but friendly hotel only a couple of blocks away from Times Square (about 10 mins gentle walk), in the up and coming area of Hells Kitchen. The staff were helpful and the rooms well above average for a hotel at this price - clean, everything working, and of a good size. They were happy to accommodate an early arrival and store sutcases until check-in, and also to arrange the shuttle bus to JFK. The only critisism? A lack of a lift to get heavy cases to the third floor (although in fairness the porter did all the work!). Thoroughly recommended to anyone who wants to stay in a pleasant hotel in central NY which has some character.

Enjoyable stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great little place to stay. Super nice people. Room was clean and nice.

Price was super and worth the money. Breakfast in the morning (continental) was fresh and good. Great location combined with great service and a great place to rest and shower make it a premier spot to get back out to take another bite of the BIG APPLE. Highly recommend and would definitely stay again. No elevator but I needed the exercise anyway. Ask Mike to show you his younger day picture.

Good value and clean

good inexpensive place if you want to be close to the theatre district. Clean, helpful staff and located on a quiet street.

Great B&B

Great B&B. Cozy warm fireplace. Great Coffee and muffins. Great shampoo & conditioner. I forgot my toothbrush and the staff provided me a new one in a matching box that the shampoo was in. The hotel staff was so helpful and friendly. I will defiantly stay here again
