... all over the southern hemisphere. There were 3 nesting chicks (19 pounds...same weight as their parents). The parents go on 2-day fishing trips and only return to the chicks every 2 days. So in a 30-minute viewing window, our chances of seeing a bird in flight were low. But, in the last 5 minutes, a gorgeous parent dramatically swooped in and circled our viewing center, showing off its width as it made the sharp turns. It was a fast ...
Dunedin, New Zealand sps5032We booked all our buses with intercity on a flexi-pass so we've a 50hr ticket to get to all 11 places we'd earmarked to see beforehand. This particular journey took 5 hours down the Eastern coast to Dunedin. Dunedin is essentially a Uni-town but for Fran it had Cadbury world and that was something we were not about to miss out on. Unfortunately there was renovating work being carried out and we only got the short tour ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand tomandfran... them :-). From there I went back to Sandfly Bay, just before sunset. The beach there was the most beautiful beach I've seen the whole trip. The wind was blowing hard against the wind so the splashes from the waves caught the orange light of the disappearing sun - Spectacular! The real special thing about this beach is the fact it's one of the few places you could see the rare yellow-eyed pinguins in the wild. They come usually during ...
Otago Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand ramdayan... obeyed the signs and parked at the bottom so we could walk up. It's a shame no one else did this, so there was a constant stream of cars struggling up and then back down the road (it is a dead end). The pictures were good fun and by the time we had walked up and back, we really felt we had earned our visit! The following day we moved on to Te Anau, to be within striking distance of Milford Sound (possibly the most highly recommended place in New Zealand)...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand nick.maynard... and sure enough, the sealion suddenly woke up and charged straight towards them at a surprisingly fast rate. They retreated pretty fast too. Bought some lunch to have back in the room, then went out to meet a friend in the afternoon. Usual evening out on the town, with no shortage of pubs for the university population. 14 December Quiet morning in the motel, then we drove to Mosgiel to meet an ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand russdi... are), and while the climb up was okay, realised when I ran into some people coming the other way, that I had only been thinking about getting up there, and had obviously assumed there was some sort of zipwire or something down again. Instead, it involved (unsurprisingly) walking back down the slippery, rocky, dusty path, which wasn't too bad to get up, but pulling oneself up a rock is not the same as jumping down from said rock when the landing ground is scree ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand suzloua...
Dunedin, New Zealand slumber... we did not spot any flappy furry cows. We also saw much "hedge-age" and many "tree walls". First stop, the Cadbury Factory. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Then, we split up and who knows what was seen. Natalie may have found the Speights Brewery, the Railyway Station and a few other monuments. Find out tomorrow what Natasha discovered! At 4pm, we'll meet up again and make our way to Lanarch Castle and Lodge for dinner and our overnight stay.
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand littlepetal... free to stop whenever I wanted and for as long as I wanted. And I was able to appreciate how expensive petrol is in NZ. <br><br> Driving distances, especially on the South Island, are famously deceptive. Though towns are generally clustered closer together than you find in Australia or elsewhere, the almost universal two lane highway routes are limited by the continually shifting contours of the countryside, and it’s not unusual to spend most of the time well under ...
