Also because of this, every student must attend every class (no skipping class to go on weekend trips). In Maastricht, Carnaval is a huge celebration. Originally, it began as a Catholic celebration right before Lent begins. Now, it's just one big, three-day-long party. People here begin preparing for the event in November, even though Carnaval is the first weekend in March. Suffice it to say, it's a big deal here in Maastricht and I'm so excited to be able to participate. We even get an entire week off of school for it.

... pictures and ended up eating at McDonalds, which was glorious. American food is so wonderful. I'm not a huge fan of Dutch food so far, so this was a welcome relief. Also, McDonalds took my Visa which was super exciting for me, even though my meal was $9.00 (holy expensive meal at McDonalds!).
