With our new French mates and a jolly Brit we head off to visit the Yanar Dag (fire mountain) and Baku Ateshgah (Zoroastrian Fire temple).

Yanar Dag is a natural gas fire which continuously blazes on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula off the Caspian Sea. Due to the large concentration of natural gas in the area natural flames burned there throughout antiquity and were reported by historical writers such as Marco Polo.

I returned to the hotel at 4pm but it was after 5pm before Helen contacted us to say that we would be staying the night in the hotel and we could not get on the ferry without visas. We were also informed that we would have to visit the Turkmenistan Embassy in the morning (Friday) to obtain them.
