... introduced ourselves and said we knew Rachel Day and were staying with her friend George. It turned out George was the sous chef there so he came out to say hello. We had the farmers market 3 course meal that Rachel had told us about. They only do it on a Tuesday so that was lucky. Our trip from the Chicago area to California was on the cross-country rail route known as "The California Zephyr". It's reputed to be the most scenic rail journey in America and it didn't disappoint. We'd been planning this trip for 6 months, so it was very exciting to finally embark.

So we ate at a lovely Italian on Fisherman's wharfs & grabbed a very busy Tram back to hotel where we had a night cap to aid sleep. A Fabulous ...

... not the old fashioned way, verbally. The hostess then sees the order on her iPad and serves you. The flight was fairly short and again, Jane slept the whole way!

The bus from the airport to Downtown San Fran took 80 minutes but only cost $2 or 1.20 each for a 14 mile trip - bargain! On the way we saw so many homeless people sleeping under bridges and in parks. There are an excessive amount ...

    Happy San Francisco Birthday Deanne

... thinkers to its core. Deanne and I are both sure of that. The New York Beats came to favour this town for that reason. Jack Kerouac himself had met with San Francisco writers and artists who had been active in the Red Thirties but who had become, not professional anti-Bolsheviks, but anarchists and pacifists. During WW2, meetings of pacifist and anarchist organisations continued to be well attended. Immediately on the war's end a group of San Francisco writers and artists ...
