Climbing a couple of flights of stairs to a balcony to overlook the tannery, the smell was quite strong, but really no worse than entering a working farmyard. The photos show the large dye pools with men working in them, treading the pelts down into the dye. The white pools seen in one photo are filled with a solution of ammonia and pigeon poo.
