A lovely hotel. Beautifully decorated, very comfortable, and it has a pool, which of course is important to our kids. It is close to Hearst Castle and to the Elephant Seal Rookery. Continental breakfast is included. We did book through Expedia so managed to save quite a lot of money. Highly recommend.

    An American Castle
Last night, we arrived at The Morgan Hotel in San Simeon. It was a place to sleep before visiting Hearst Castle, and we found it on Expedia. The price was right, and it was as lovely as it looked in pictures. The pool was great, if a little chilly for this family, but we had a great feast of pizza and salad, and crashed after …

    En route to San Simeon
After a wonderful breakfast at The Crow's Nest in Santa Cruz, the Turners headed down the coast toward San Simeon, California. We had been told that we really should see the 17 Mile Drive; it was supposedly beautiful. So, when we saw the sign, we pulled up the gate, paid our 10 dollars (!) and drove around the area of …

... other people talking to her. She said that she didn’t have any sites, but we could park in the overflow parking lot and put the tent up in the large grassy area, and share a picnic table, but still pay the full amount. Luckily there was a nice guy that overheard us talking and offered to share his campsite - sweet! Each campsite allowed two cars, so we pulled into the empty space and found a grassy spot to put up the tent. Once the tent was up, we fixed peanut butter and ...

... Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford, Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers to name a few, now that's what I call a party!
Another interesting fact about Hearst Castle is the architect was a woman, Julia Morgan, although she is best known for her work on Hearst Castle she was the architect of over 700 buildings in California, now that's impressive!

    ... the fast lane!

After touring the castle we continued our trek along the coast. The views were unbelievably breathtaking and well worth the slow progress. We reached Santa Barbara in north-west Los Angeles at about 4:00 PM, just in time for rush hour traffic. We had to go to the south-east corner of L.A. and that certainly was a hair-raising experience. It took ...
