Pilgrims would keep their eyes fixed on the abbey's spire crowned by their protector, St. Michael to eventually reach their spiritual goal. ... cemetery, the US one is monumental and awe inspiring.  Granted, four times as many soldiers died. I arrived in Caen in the evening although there was still considerable daylight at 2000 hours. Signs on A13 directed drivers to a Boulevard Peripherique which gave me an image of a loop around town; and from there road signs pointed to Centre Ville which is where I thought I wanted to be.
