... of Queen Victoria and married, at 17, to the Crown Prince of Romania. At the time she visited Balchik and fell in love with it, the town was in the southern part of Romania. She was quite an artist and writer and made the town a sort of artisan hub. When she died in 1938 in Siniya in Romania, her heart was returned to the chapel in Balchik for burial.

We decided to explore a bit further south and have a look at Sozopol. It's another ancient town, but not a World Heritage site like this one. Took about an hour to drive there - managed to resist the temptation to stop in Burgas this time - and arrived in one piece despite some of the dreadful driving we saw.

... to the new town. A nice sandy beach, but full of sun beds etc even now. I would hate to be here in the main season. Not really much to write about, but managed to buy a beach towel (bright pink which I will leave with you Pam) and have lunch in a pretty restaurant overlooking the causeway and old town.
