Finally, while leaving the store, we found one, but it was definitely a close call. The people were very sweet, but definitely new to the tourist trade.

Just a word on environmental issues - China has a reputation for being the Bad Boy of the environment but we have been amazed how conscious they seem to be - it's generally very clean (but they have an army of cleaners), there is good use of low energy light bulbs and in most places they have recycling and non-recyclying bins. The toilets are mostly clean and the people mostly friendly - China has come a long way in 10 years. Apart from the driving.

In fact the difference in costs for a meal are indicative of a major divide - you can still get a meal for less than 50p or you can pay well over 20 pounds (which is what our fish meal cost). The second day in Xiamen was as beautiful as the first. Xiamen's tropical environment was a welcome relief from the chilly weather I had been living through in Nanjing and Kaifeng.
