Otters and elk enroute to Grey Owl's cabin

... head along a snow-covered and slippery road. The hike itself was pretty easy. Not as flat as you would think (this was Saskatchewan) but with no climbs of any note - there was one switchback on the trail which we jokingly dubbed 'the' Saskatchewan switchback. The definite highlight was finding a family of otters at play in the lake – much grappling and twisting in the water and then curling up on the sunny bank to dry. We arrived at the ...

Green Peas Don’t Make Good Soup

Some miles down the messy road we passed a restaurant in tiny hamlet called Ile De Bellevue. Outside there was a little model village and a statue that looked a bit like a tree. We backtracked and went into the Cultural Center. The statue was of a pea plant, green pods and all – of course we took a picture of it. I asked if they had pea soup for lunch. "Of course" the charming little ...

Happy Memories

... my younger years. It is a sleepy little town now but Bryan has already found the coffee shop and is getting in on all the latest gossip in town.
It's a sweet time with Mom and my brother. We took her to the lake last night for a picnic and had an unexpected visit with two cousins as well; one of whom I thought I might be seeing in Quebec.
How cool is that?!

Hanging Around the Lake

... Trail along the riverbank and boreal forest. We didn't carry our bear spray but noticed others had it so next time we will take ours. The only wildlife we saw were ducks and a few fish. Further along on the way back we met up with an elk on the side of the road. She didn't mind having her picture taken.
Talking to the lodge owner, we learned that the area is having a bear problem ...

... Aspens in the far north create a white bloom on the south and south-west bark so that it reflects light (heat) in early Spring so the sap will not rise in the tree and freeze during cold nights thus damaging the tree.

Finished planning, provisioning and scheduling a four day trip to Grey Owl’s cabin now that the fires are under control. Left on Sunday June 21’st (Happy Birthday Margorie B :)) just before the rain and drizzle began. After paddling up-stream on a small ...

Ukrainians in Canada

... own tight-knit farming communities. The village is comprised of actual Ukrainian buildings from multiple Canadian towns that were moved to this site. They started out as subsistence farmers, but with the advent of trains for transport and grain elevators for storage, they could change to cash crops which fueled greater economic prosperity. I would see these Ukrainian Orthodox churches scattered all over Alberta, Saskatchewan and ...

Golfing the Lobstick, hiking and sunset watching

Made the drive north in two hours. A beautiful day to see the ice flows on the lake, hike the Red Deer trail, book into the Hawood and make it to our 5pm twilight golf time. An amazing time golfing and watching all the animals come out to feed at dusk. Nothing like finishing off the game with a large pizza at Pizza Pete's!! Sunday we car-pooled into Prince ...

Left Malta at about 8:30 a.m. A very uneventful ride. Crossed the border with only a few questions from the border guard. He didn't even check my bags...didn't take my ID into the office....didn't ask if I've ever been arrested. Weather not warm, but not too cool given I have an electric heated vest. At Rosetown, it appeared that it would rain so switched to my full-face helmet. No rain until after I arrived in Prince Albert. In all, an excellent adventure. 3,855 kms trip.
