... majority of the towns, there was barely a hotel open. Many of the hotels obviously hadn't been open for a while, inspite of their advertising along the road. Where there was the odd hotel open, the town struggled to have an eatery that might be open in the evening.

While not getting desperate, were quite relieved when we discovered Hotel dei Bizantini, just outside Campo dei Messapi.

... Discovered the hard way, of course, that in times past, the walls of churches/basilicas and even cathedrals were used as supporting walls for other buildings. ... for less than €12 a night. To top it all, we walk alone through olive groves for an hour without leaving the site.

It's not grim up north.

The weather prediction further north to Foggia and beyond to Tuscany is for full sun with temperatures rising to the mid-twenties. I think we are going to enjoy our long meandering journey home.

What a heel !!

... meandering through the heel of Italy in search of utopia (yoga at a site that on arrival appeared to be closed). The second too depressing to stay at. We end up at 7.30pm in the dark parked by rubbish and recycling bins outside a very closed campsite in Sant Isidora near Gallipoli. Another night when I was told to keep my eyes peeled and stay alert.
