... station with shops and restaurant. What was so special about this station is that the entire set up was powered by solar panels. Could we possibly think of establishing something similar in Australia?

... year Italy's farmers are growing Sweetcorn....lots of them. Very good but there were fields and fields of them. There wasnt a great deal going on, the only thing of note was the studied ignorance of the lady working behind the buffet counter, she was great, she made everyone wait and remained unflustered as the queues built up. Order a drink and she'd walk away from you, after you eventually got served she would consult ...

Leaving the refuge the next morning we passed a memorial to a half dozen US fliers who had died on the mountain nearby during WWII when their bomber crashed into the mountain. Some of their remains remained frozen in ice till the 1970's when they were returned to the US for burial.

... and most of them are passing us on the trail.. grrrr.

We've established a routine now of sharing a nice cold beer at the end of each day's long hike. Dinner was excellent - very tender beef and a nice custard for dessert. We sat next to a French woman who tried very hard to use her limited English, which was endearing but made for a very slow tortured conversation. I ended up going to get my smart phone which had a translation app (very handy!).

Lots of steep uphill today, finally reaching one of the highest points of the whole trip, the Col du Bonhomme

At one point Barbara thought she was being attacked by a bull, but after scrambling up a rock to escape it turned out to be a cow with horns in a frisky mood!

Views back down the valley have been stunning. Thankfully the weather has stayed sunny but cool (upper 60's?)- perfect for hiking. ...
