... 2 hours to get up to the top and once here, we made a short detour to Brinegar Cabin, following the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. This historic cabin was built around 1880 by Martin Brinegar, who lived here with his wife Caroline and their family until the 1930s. Unbeknownst to us the state of West Virginia was celebrating its 151st birthday on June 20, and he invited us to join the celebration. It required us to stay an additional day, but we accepted his invitation. We then toured the museum. When ...

Gail cooked a wonderful Sunday morning breakfast and we enjoyed a leisurely meal with much conversation. Jan and I headed back to Raleigh mid-morning. One really nice thing about main North Carolina highways is that they are mostly bordered by trees and bushes so you rarely see houses and other buildings. Up until very recently billboards were banned -- much more pleasing without all the advertising. After a last-minute check of RT, I started on my way home. Took I-40 ...
