After a lazy morning, we had lunch in Balk at a little fish shop by the river.

This little harbour on Friesland has been the destination of our family for many a trip. Papa used to sail from here on his friend's yacht. So we often came to visit, when they were getting ready to leave or when they had just returned.

Then the sea begins to rise and constant floods make Schokland an island.
Densely populating the island two communities live here and prospered. They fished and farmed. Until 1825 when major flooding brings massive destruction and hardship. This leads to the island being deserted in 1859.

We had a little walk (you could circumnavigate the place in 30 min.) and took lots of pictures.

... in about 3.30. it was called Hotel de Stripe. It was beautiful, although not air conditioned. We were on the first floor, and overlooked the terrace café. The room is quite large, and modern.
