We made a half day trip to Arles from Nimes by train.

Being a small village we were able to see most of what there was in the central part quite easily. There is the main arena, roughly the same size as the arena in Nimes, and also the Ampitheatre nearby, which is mostly ruins now.

... it was the weekend and very soon after New Year's Day.

I missed out on seeing the Gardens and the Castle as I arrived late and they'd already done it.

From here we also did a half-day trip to Arles - see next entry.
There are other smaller villages around to do day trips to/from, such as Avignon.
Marseilles and Montpelier are also 2-3 hours away by train.

... Chartreuse - (which is no longer inhabited) and we walked through the rooms including how the father would have stayed in isolation with food delivered through a hole. It was built in the 13th century (gosh everything was so old yet so well-maintained). The then-pope donated his land to be built into the monastery.
