Day 72 - Avignon of Popes and Palaces

... for six French popes over 70 years in the 14th century. There are actually two large palaces or chateaus next to each other with different architectures. Touring the Palais took about ninety minutes after which we left and toured the Pont D'Avignon also known as the bridge of St Benezet. A 13th century bridge that crosses the Rhone River. Although for the last 700 years, the bridge only goes halfway across the river. What happened to the rest remains a mystery.

Day 71 - Provence Provincial

Monaco was cloudy and grey this morning when we woke. It is November after all. We checked out of the Port Palace Hotel about 10:00 and departed for Provence. The drive was about three hours and 25€ in tolls. While all part of the travel experience, the cost is a bit aggravating for those of us who are use to "freeways".

... a few hours of the afternoon. Our second stop was Palais de Papas, the Popes Palace. Jenna and I had already decided yesterday that we would go in as there wasn't much else to do in Avignon so at least it would fill in the day. The palace itself wasn't overly exciting but it was interesting to read some of the information cards to know what the rooms were used for and what significant historical events took place here. Nightmare Travelling to Mt Ventoux

... at them. At the end they were setting out 5 or 6 bulls at a time. I didn't like it. I felt sorry for the bulls.

When we got home we were allowed to go for another swim. It was so much fun in the dark with no one else in the pool. Mum came and played chasing with us.

Then we went to bed as we have a big ride to do tomorrow. We are going climbing up Mt Ventoux from Sault.

The soil in this area is perfect for wine grapes -it is covered with tiny pebbles which hold the heat and keep the vines at a constant temperature day and night. Rose is banned!
