Tatry Wysokie

... turning back.

While in the Polish part of the Tatry you can hike any time of the year, in the Slovakian one there are more restrictions. Between October and May, entering the Slovakian Tatra National Park is prohibited. As far as tthe Polish Tatra National Park, the rescue team always displays a note both in each mountain hostel and at every entrance to the park about the level of the avalanche danger.

Oravsky Castle

... the world is Oravsky Podzamok, located in a village called, to no one's surprise, Oravsky Podzamok. The castle is seen from the narrow yet quite well-kept road, so you can't miss it. There is a huge car park right next to the road, you can also eat traditional sausages with Zlaty Mnich beer, or buy some wooden souvenirs here. It's worth mentioning, however, that Slovakia has just entered the eurozone and for this ...

The mountains

... place is its proximity to the mountains and to a variety of things you can do if you are not particularly keen on hiking. It's close to the Morskie Oko lake, and the red colour trail to Rysy, the highest peak of Poland. It's close to the Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich, which is a valley of six lakes surrounded by the mountains. Last but not least, it's close to Slovakia, which is just 10 km away. It has a huge thermal swimming ...

Morskie Oko

... to get more steep. Every so often, wagons with horses would go downhill or uphill. We then got to a point where we were climbing on these rocks. That is where it got hot and sweaty. But in almost two hours we got to the Morskie Oko. It was extremely beautiful....basically mountains surrounding this lake. Even though there were a lot of people there, it was still very peaceful. What I really like about Zakopane is that any tourists or people that are around here are ...

Poland: They do amazing things with cabbage

... after 9pm we had got more than our 8 hours of recommended sleep. One night we decided to make use of the sauna in Magnolia - it seemed like the best idea in the world when we were skiing that day but when we actually went into the sauna later than night it was so boiling hot we could barely stay in there longer than 5 minutes and it was booked for half an hour. We did it in steps of sweating it out in the sauna then having to step out again to breathe and ...

Tearing it up in the Tatras

After just two full weeks back at school after the Easter break I found myself in the fortunate position of figuring out what to do with another three day holiday. The May long weekend was ************g weekend though, and the people who drew up our school calendar needed a good talking to as the break was on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This meant I still had to work on the Monday and Friday! Nevertheless, while that limited me a little, I knew where I could maximise a three ...

... the journey was great, there were trails and we got to the peaks and the view was amazing. The second part was alright. There was a heavy fog, and it was getting colder, so it was not worth the current walk, but I knew it'd be a big accomplishment. The cold wind made it feel like in the 30s F and without it, it still felt like the low 60s F. Then when we got to the second peak Rohace, things changed. It was very rocky. And ...

... but actually took way longer and had to miss stuff as we had to head off. That afternoon we headed to Zakopane. Zakopane - 11/08/04 - 13/08/04 (South of Krakow - near the border between Poland and Slovakia) By the time we got into Zakopane it was late and we were starving so went to a pub in town and had kebabs that are cooked on these huge bbq's (grills - they called them) - food was fantastic. We had some entertainment with a band playing traditional ...

National Parks and Prune-stuffed Pork

... by a fiddle and other stringed instruments. The children were dressed in colourful traditional costumes and seemed to thoroughly enjoy what they were doing. It was wonderful to see this show that was not meant for tourists but to maintain the traditions. My impression of the Poles after seeing this and the Radio Maria show in Zamosc is that they are rather reserved, very conservative, very religious people ...
