    ... Huge lucky break. Major accident and all lanes were blocked just past our airport exit and we got in there just in time! I shot a pic from the exit bridge so you can see how close it was.

    ... But we did end up driving all the way with a couple of short stops along the way to take some pics and check out what the people fishing off the bridges were catching.

    Have attached some pics from the drive to Key West and our stops.

    We made it to Key West and drove to where South 1 highway could go no more! The southernmost point in Continental USA - according to the monument there, Cuba is 90 miles away. See attached pic.

    Today we woke early with the prospect of a snorkelling trip out to the reef. There is a state park 2 miles up the road where, in the 1920s, a Miami newspaper editor bought part of the island and made it the first underwater reserve in America.     ... had 2 hours of driving to reach key west. It was quite amazing driving along the highway 1 which is really like bridge after bridge over some of the most aqua water I have ever seen. The keys are several small islands that are joined by bridges which were built by the government to reduce the smuggling of drugs and presence of pirates back in 1938.
