    ... Lots of canals, lots of boats and lots of walking. Surprisingly, you can walk everywhere in this historic district using the many small bridges that cross all the canals. You just can't walk anywhere in a straight line, and you need to deal with the crowds.

In our immediate vicinity, Rex and I one side, across the aisle a couple (German I think) in their 50's, behind them a big lanky Italian guy about 30-ish. We haven’t been long out of the station when a conductor comes through and the couple nab him and explain there is an unattended bag above them on the rack.     Visited the huge Basilica of St. Francis, housing the saint’s tomb. Built in the 13C, the frescoes by Giotto heralded a new era in Italian art. Giotto painted the frescos that told of Jesus' early life, all the others painted by other artists in Giotto style. St Francis' life was also told in frescos which covered walls and ceilings.     ... didn't have much of a plan other than to see the Rialto bridge, San Marco square, St Marks Basilica and fish and fruit markets. We definitely took some wrong turns and ended up at dead ends.
