... it was just too tempting to pass up, as hiking there would not only get my out of Duncannon but also push my mileage for the day up to 30, something I had been wanting to do for a while. So I walked over to the Pilot truck stop at the edge of town (past all the run-down gentleman's clubs and adult shops next to the river, further confirming my impression of the town) to grab a Subway sandwich and headed out around 9:30 p.m. for my first night hike on the trail.

My boat crew was made up of a Vietnam era Marine (yellow PFD), two Army Reserve CGOs (two in the middle) and a Airman (back left behind bucket) who worked in Iraq as a Combat Controller before leaving the service. His wife (far left front) was also with us.

... happen on the Appalachian Trail. It was a fantastic way to celebrate the halfway point on the trail. I am now 1,217 miles in, and Pennsylvania has become very rocky and started to live up to its namesake of "the place where shoes go to die".
