... train food, and it was our last train in China. Our first hurdle was the menu, it was all in Chinese with no pictures however with the help of miming, the Lonely Planet language section and Chinese/English app we managed to order a chicken dish, a beef dish, vegetables and rice, we even got a watery, tomatoey, eggy soup as well. Dali is mostly Bai people and their houses are decorated with intricate black and white patterns and murals on the walls. Closer to Kunming there were dinosaurs painted on the walls and then further towards Dali the murals changed to just intricate patterns similar to Celtic ones. When we got to Dali ...

... taxied over to the terminal I started to get very anxious as every sign, every logo, everything I could lay my eyes on was written in Chinese characters… suddenly I realized what a huge challenge we had set ourselves. I felt in my pocket for our Mandarin phrasebook and prayed that we would be able to wing the next 30 days on barely a scrap of Mandarin. Once we had cleared customs and got our bags we headed out to find a cash-machine; it is ...
