... clear the snow from my shoe and I got a bit bogged and off balance so landed in the snow. Where it is very soft, it was harder but most of the parts we walked were quite ok. Partway through we stopped for a hot drink and a biscuit. Our guide made a seat in the snow and gave us plastic sheets to sit on which kept a tiny bit of the chill out of the bottom. We wandered back around through the trees and out onto some white on white areas. The ...

Up to the mountains

Today is the day to venture up to the Japanese Alps to Myokokogan. Marina was lovely enough to drop us over to the train rather than us having to go all the way back down to Nagano and back up on the other line. The train had few other tourist looking mobs on it heading up to the ski resorts. It was a pretty journey up through the hills with the snow getting deeper and deeper. We ...

Last night when we were chatting , I mentioned that it was forecast to snow, that was dismissed, no it won't snow. During the night I got up to visit the loo and it was happily snowing away and looked like it had been for a while. So pretty. Today was to be Scotty's choice of activity and after a homemade brekky we got the train back down to Nagano to see the Zenko-Ji temple. The forecast was for about 2* max so we were pretty ...

The walk in was lovely, a tiny bit slippery in some parts but very pretty through the forest. After paying 500Y we walked around the river and there they were. The first ones we spotted were sitting in the snow by the river and a few were running around. Then we got into the section where the hot water ...

Trains and trains

... stops and pretty easy to navigate. Ueno station was huge and we finally found the right ticket office to get out pass from. After this we went and got some food to take on the train for lunch. There was a place which had lots of choices so we got a mix, some gyoza, some rice with beans and some yakkitori chicken skewers. It was all lovingly wrapped in tons of plastic for the bin! The train journey itself was lovely, nice comfy seats, great view of the snowy hills beyond. It ...
