Castle sweetness

... manhole covers in each of the towns we visited.

It was noon so we went to grab some lunch. There was a soba (a type of thin Japanese noodle made from buckwheat flour. It's served either chilled with a dipping sauce, or in hot broth) restaurant named Nomugi that was recommended by Lonely Planet. According to the guidebook, the owner was a famous soba maker in the region. We were only given an address of the restaurant and ...

Night in Matsumoto

... some money on cab fare. Hopefully I can remember to ride on the left side of the street and the other vehicles remember to do the same. I'm also hoping that the rumors of English-speaking guides are true.

Adjusting my expectations... I had thought I'd zip through the castle and get to Kyoto early. Probably not. Everything takes longer than you think.

We heart monkeys :)

... There we spent the night in a ryoken- a traditional guest house with tatimi mats that you sleep on. The place was very old and our room was enveloped by cool paper sliding doors. The hostess poured us some green tea before she left and gave us kimonos to wear around the place. For dinner we went out and found ourselves in a Hawaiian restaurant- bit odd I know! Then we went back and slept on the floor.

Still Awake!!

Alright, so I ended up getting roughly an hour of sleep, but I think it was less since I kept waking up. I let one of the Japanese kids sleep in my room since he was locked out and ended up on the couch and then trying to sleep in one of the classrooms. After Nanami and I stayed up talking all night, I really didn't want to sleep that much. It was a lot to digest, but it was a lot of fun. Breakfast came and went and then we had a final Q&A ...

Day two of the seminar included presentations by all the American students on a policy book and another book called Japan: Unbound by John Nathan. My presentations focused on Fiscal Policy comparing Japan and America and Breakdown in the Classroom, a focus on Education. After the presentations, we broke into smaller groups with some of the Japanese ...

The first week in Matsumoto

... at the new face in their class and one of them, Ai, actually climbed into my lap about half way through. This class is a lot of singing, learning their alphabet, shapes, colors, basic actions, that sort of thing. It's a lot for the mothers too, so they'll be able to communicate at home and teach their kids the songs. The "babies" only say a couple of words if we're lucky. Next, Bruce (the out-going teacher) showed me the ins and outs of the office and ...
