        Breakfast in the hotel which was an odd mix of Japanese with some western options. You can hear gunshots all the time, as we are in an orchard area they use it to frighten the birds so they won't ruin the fruit. The apples are HUGE and delicious. They is also lots of persimmons and enormous, very expensive grapes. The grapes are covered in plastic bags on the vine to keep them free of imperfections. The rice is being harvested and there ...

        I rode from my friend's place in Shinagawa to the Tokyo train station this morning to very little traffic as it was a holiday Monday here. I was on the road by 7:30 AM before there were too many cars on the road and it was a bit of rush to be riding down these huge, empty streets in central Tokyo.         Woke early and caught a taxi to Ueno station. JR Shinkansen to Nagano, then electric train on the Nagano dentetsuline to Yudanaka. Walked up to our accomodation - Shimaya.
