      ... the onsen. It really was a brilliant experience and well worth the 3300yen (roughly £20) I had paid to get there and the drenching I had got on the way. On the coach journey back the sky had cleared up slightly, allowing for full views of the impressive mountainous scenery and orchard fields that surround the basin in which Nagano sits.       Matsumoto castle is not very big. It was constructed between 1592 and 1614. It has 5 stories but from the outside, it looks af though there is only 4. There is a hidden level inside where gunpowder and other armaments were stored. The steps up were quite steep and high. If you were tall, it was OK but if you had short legs, it was a bit of a stretch. Coming down was worse. It was far easier ...

      ... broke and we could see the alps and Mt Tateyama surrounding us. It wasn't that cold, surprisingly. We then took a Tunnel Trolley bus across to the ropeway at Daikanbo. I had just bought my nice, hot sweet potato but on trying to take a photo of the arriving cable car, it fell out of its bag and went splat about 3m down.
