We arranged to go snow shoeing today. Our guest house host is a mountain guide so he is taking us out for an adventure which is great. We can only do a half day today due to the weather coming in snowy in the afternoon but that is fine, still gives us a taste of it. We got kitted out with boots and snow shoes and poles and bundled into the van to head up the road. It is about 2* so not too chilly. We had to get the right balance of warm but not ...

... the yummiest udon's I have ever had. Scott had udon with garlic and cheese, a local speciality for the alps. After lunch we were dropped at the ski gondola to go up the mountain for a view of the area. It was a lovely cloudless day so a good chance to do this as the weather is forecast to come in nasty in the next few days. For dinner we went back into town for 2 young teachers ...

... pm and made the decision to head back to Nagano to find some dinner. Our timing meant that we caught the local train rather than the express which stopped at every station and got a bit tedious. It seats only about 10 people around a bar and you buy a ticket ...

Well today I managed to tick another big ticket off my wildlife list. The Japanese Macaques or Snow Monkeys. Marina made us a delicious traditional breakfast of rice balls stuffed with seaweed and local plums plus a bowl of miso soup and some pickled vegetables and grasshopper. Yes you heard correct grasshopper! They are quite nice really in a exoskeletal kind of way. We had to get the Snow Monkey Express up to Yudanaka to then get a ...

... stops and pretty easy to navigate. Ueno station was huge and we finally found the right ticket office to get out pass from. After this we went and got some food to take on the train for lunch. There was a place which had lots of choices so we got a mix, some gyoza, some rice with beans and some yakkitori chicken skewers. It was all lovingly wrapped in tons of plastic for the bin! The train journey itself was lovely, nice comfy seats, great view of the snowy hills beyond. It ...
