Chicago/Guatemala City

I arrived in Guatemala city today around 130 and quickly worked my way out of customs and into a cluster of Guatemalan cabbies eager to take my money. I paid the taxi 50 quetzals (about 5 bucks)to show show me the different zones of the city. The city is broken down into 15 zones, zone 10 (where my hostal is) I guess is the only safe one for tourists. Even the taxi driver said he wouldn´t go down there after 1 p.m. Out of the window I pointed to what looked like a pretty neat looking outdoor ...

Hey guys Sorry I've been out of contact for a while now, it turns out that traveling and doing all the work yourself takes up considerably more time and effort than when it's all being done for you! We've come a long way in a week and a half and although the first few days in Panama were fantastic, the next few in Managua were a bit hairy! The flight from Lima was excellent, I'd recommend Copa Airlines, I think they're a branch of Continental, best airplane food I've ever had!! We jumped in a...

Landslide!

Guatemala is definitely a harder and scarier place to travel than Mexico and I am starting to wonder if I am wise to do all this on my own. Had a bit of a scary experience yesterday - was on a chicken bus (ancient rickety American school buses painted in psychedelic colours and used here as the only means of public transport - here's one http://www.pbase.com/garoessler/image/2 5713061) wobbling along a winding road through the highlands when a stationary traffic queue forced us to stop. I tho...

Time to Head Home :(

... And the Asian food for purchase really is good and inexpensive. Kinda cool to eat spicy chicken and fried rice at 30,000 feet. The planes are kept clean, too which is a nice treat from the filth we ride in back home.

Best Experience - Hiking around the Outback because of the scenery, isolation, wildlife and views. Where else would a wallabee flip you off? Climbing up the Rock of Gibralter is a close second.

Favorite Part of Trip ...

... the Habitat team. I have never been on a chicken bus. I have visions of the bus that Joan Wilder takes in Romancing the Stone. Basically they are former US and Canadian schoolbuses repurposed for passengers.

We ended up on a greyhound-type bus instead. Oh well.

We did eat some pretty good food on the bus. Apparently bus food is an important part of the culture. It even got a write up in the guide books.

happy mothers day on active volcano Pacaya

... We could see the lights of Guatemala City and a huge solid lava field from where the mountain had spewed. Up a little further we came to the lookout point. 3 of the group stayed here and the others (Teryn and I) continued on to get a little closer to the action.

We scrambled across the rock terrain, it was like fine pebbles/sand at first then it turned to solid lava rock. Lago de Atitlan

... Santiago is a smallish town with nothing particularly special to see except for the statue of Saint Simon and a prettyish pier with the view of Volcan San Pedro. We wandered around, played a game of 2 on 2 basketball in the local school yard and tagged along with a tour group to see the infamous Saint Simon. Apparently the only way to see the other towns on the lake was to take a 25 quetzels boat ride back to Pana then travel by ...

Antigua

So, I suggest that we only use the word to describe truly awesome experiences...like teaching kids.

Sometimes, I’ll be teaching the niños something new and it’ll take them a while to catch on, but eventually and by degrees they’ll start to take to it and eventually they can do it almost as well as I can. I could say that when this happens I feel truly fulfilled and a smile spreads across my face as ...

While getting a good old fashion shoe shine, a kind french man and his son informed us about a camping sight just a few blocks away.
