Amanda: We took a LONG bus ride from Taupo to Wellington. Since there isn't really a national train service, the coach lines are pretty extensive. However, big surprise, the bus ran about an hour late coming into Taupo. oh well. Wellington has a cool artsy vibe. It's very hilly and very windy! We walked all around the central city but didn't get many pics of the old architecture. alot of victorian houses and coffee shops. it has more cafes than any other NZ city and we were a-ok with that. it...
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand cheesenutTues 13th May - We were up at 5am to catch the flight to Wellington to begin our tour of the North Island so today has been a pretty long day. We arrived at the hostel at around 9am so still had the whole day to explore! We took a ride on the cable car tram to the top of a really steep hill and then checked out the cable car museum. It seems that a fair few people living in Wellington have had their own cable cars installed to take them from the street at the top of the public cable car to th...
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand edandaliAfter our time in prison we headed for Wellington. We stopped over for one night in Palmerston North, and stayed in a great hostel, the Pepper Tree, it was one of the few that actually felt like you were in someone's home, and there were lots of shoes spray painted green with flowers planted in them, strange but cute. Sprinter (the car) is leaving us in Wellington, so we had to take everything out & try and fit it in our cases, not easily done! It seemed like a cute little city, but we li...
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand jenandniamhChecked out the gigantic and high quality Te Papa Tongarewa history museum. You could wander for days or weeks inside this one museum and never fully digest it all. That said, in the time I did spend in there I wander between art, cultural, natural and historical exhibits of my choosing and relished them all. The next day we walked around downtown a bit and then headed out of town before lunch. We stopped at the massive Southward Car Museum north of town and dad and I took a quick look throug...
Wellington, New Zealand jkirbyAfter a wonderful week "at home" with the family I decided to become a bit more adventurous and so on monday bought a very expensive (but well worth it) ferry ticket to the South Island. The ferry ride was 3 hours of sunny, perfect bliss! The scenery was so so so so so so so beautiful - i tried to take some photos but they really don't do it justice! We went right through the Marlborough Sounds (which everyone has to see at some point!) to Picton and were even followed by some seals part of the...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand maevetillyGot up early to hitch to Picton, I was gonna try and do another walk in the area as i'd previously done part of the Queen Charlotte track about 7 weeks ago. Got picked up almost immediately by Greta, a substitute teacher from Picton so managed to get all the way in one hitch. A complete result. Arrived in Picton by about 12ish and as it was sunny when i left Kaikoura, it was very grey, miserable and soon to be completely the opposite here. Greta dropped me off at The Villa where i'd stayed pr...
Wellington, New Zealand mattoliverJuly 25th Today we drove from Taupo to wellington. We left at 10 and arrived at 4:30 in the afternoon. The high way is very good and we were lucky it wasn't closed today. it's pritty straight and I watched as the town turned into tundra and the sheep disappeared. Then the green fields returned and we started passing small towns again. Anyway we made it to wellington and learned that it's not built for cars very quickly. The roads are very very narrow and the intersections are not marked out v...
