Caye Caulker

We arrive in Caye Caulker around 11:30 am, and went straight to the hostel that was just off the pier on the water. It was called Tina's Backpackers Hostel. Instead of looking around for a cheaper place, it was easier to stay there. We got a dorm room with a "double" bed and a bunk bed. The reason I say "double" was because it was more of a large single bed. We thought it was unfair that we had to pay the same price for 2 people in the smaller bed so i thought that I would take the top bunk, ...

20,000 millimeters under the sea

This week I have been finding out that Tropical Island living suits me pretty well. Caught a direct tourist shuttle to Belize City last Wednesday and from there a water taxi to Caye Caulker, a small island 45 mins across turquoise blue seas. Stayed for 4 nights, at Tina´s Backpackers: not 100% clean but friendly and safe. The island is pretty expensive. Tina´s is the cheapest place on the island at US$10 a night for a dorm room - what you pay in Guatemala for a nice double with ensuite, and a...

Belize-Cey Calcker

My advanture tour started from Vancouver to Las Vegas, then to Charlotte City and finally to Belize City. When I got there, I head to Cey Caulker directly since the Belize City was not that impressive. I stayed at Tina's place for couple of nights. The cheapest place in the island for $15BZD. This weekend was the Lobster Festival in the island and lots of cheap lobsters for lunch and dinner. I booked the tour to the Marine Reserve Park for the next day for $90BZD with Raggamufin Tour agency.

Island Time

Caye (pronounced Kee)Caulker is a little back packer's island about a 45 minute boat ride off Belize City, North into the Carribean. There are more expensive neighboring islands, but the less expensive part is what drew me to Caye Caulker. I stayed at Tina's hostel for 15 Belizean per night. There are two showers and one is outside. The living quarters gives you nothing more than a place to stay, but the environment is great. It's easy to meet people out on the porch that's about 20 feet from...

Another day another Caye

This weekend we went and stayed up at Caye Caulker, which is like Ambergris Caye but way more touristy and laxed out. There's a place on the island called The Split which is a 30-40m wide break in the island that was formed by a hurricane. It's a great spot for swimming and there's a diving board into the ocean, smashed-up concrete jetty that everyone sunbathes on and a bar with great music. So we spent a fair few hours hangin out there throughout the weekend. Also went out on Caulkertown one...

Belize it or not...

Finally, a vacation from our vacation! That's exactly what we thought upon arriving on Caye Caulker after an early shuttle from Guatemala. Just seeing the turquoise color of the water made me want to cry with joy! Okay, not really, but it made me really freakin' happy. Our hostel, Tina's Backpackers, is pretty much right at the end of the dock, so we didn't have far to travel with our packs on in the midday sun, saved us some serious sweating. It was a nice place, right on the water with plen...

Chillin' it in Caye Caulker

heaven must be there....well its just got to be there.....*a song from the 80s showing my age*.....well I have found it and it is called Caye Caulker. Imagine a small sandy little island, plonk some turqoise water around it, palm trees along the edges, some little shacks selling fresh lobster and a cake man that rides his bike around selling delicious cake, happy hours that last from 10am to 9pm and there you have it...caye caulker. This place is so small it has three streets...Front street, ...

Discovering My Problem on Caye Caulker

My first day on Caye Caulker was spent sleeping. I know this doesn't play very well into the discover and explore model that I had previously established, but I was plum tuckered. I settled myself in for a day and night of sleep that would be amazing. 18 hours later, I crawled out of bed, out the hotel I was staying in, and then I would move onto Tina's backpacker Hostel. This place is located on the water (which means a constantly cooling breeze), hammocks, and plenty of cool and laid back p...

Caye Caulker

... The rain finally eased right before it was time to go so we all piled on the boat and headed out to the reef. The weather was still not perfect but nobody cared. At the reef we all piled in to the water ( Some with foaties:) ). We broke in to three groups and were lead around the reef with one of the crew members who did his best to educate us. The only lesson I was interested was how to ...
