Oktoberfest 2008

So we arrived in Munich ready and prepared for the craziness of Oktoberfest...or at least we thought we were ready. We got to our "tent" which was the only place we could find to book since all other accomodations were sold out months prior to our arrival in Europe. So we show up without sleeping bags or blankets and it was freezing. Luckily we were given 4 wool blankets each and the tent was actually one huge tent with 160 bunk beds. I had to go and buy a sweatshirt, gloves, and a hat to wea...

Just like in the books.

Today was really quite a day. The train last night was smelly and uncomfortable. I think it was old. Once in Munich it took some time to find my hostel, but I did. I am staying at a place called the Tent. It's sleeping on the floor, but it is cheap! After checking in I went to Dachau. It's really hard to talk about or to even comprehend. I took the audio tour, so I learned quite a bit. I was there right at the opening, so it was very much empty. At first just looking at the reconstructed barr...

Munchen Oktoberfest!!

Oktoberfest #1 For a while now Uncle Davros has been telling me of his yearly adventures to Munich for Oktoberfest celebrations. And of course if you check out the stories and the pictures it makes you want to go yourself. So it had to be done and 2008 was finally the year for it. I also grew up in a small part of South East Queensland that had been originally settled by Germans; we had our own Oktoberfests as well as the one that is in Brisbane each year so this time I finally get to experie...

Farwell to my first Oktoberfest...I shall return!

It was my last day in Munich for 2008 and after a nice warm night in the tent I was ready for one last trip to the shops & I decided on a bit of a feast. I found a seat in the corner of the Augustiner Restaurant & gorged myself on half a chicken, fries & salad & for dessert my favourite; Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder kirschtorte). I love that stuff! And it was a perfect way to end a great few days in Munich.

Munich - June 29th-July 1st After a two-hour train ride from Stuttgart's Hauptbahnhof (main train station), we found ourselves in Munich, or München. Walking outside, we were right in the middle of the city, with activity all around. Luckily, the tourist information office is right next to the Hauptbahnhof, so we walked down the street a bit and got some maps and directions to one of the vegetarian restaurants we found on happycow.com. After a bit of confusion and such, we were happy to come ...

The Tent of Wonders!

I have to admit that I was sorry to leave Berlin today. Somehow I got caught up ini the hustle of the city and swept away by the overwhelming amounts of history, culture, art, and social activity that is Berlin. My one piece of advice for those going to Berlin--take a tour and stay for at least three days; any fewer, and it would be impossible to appreciate the city.

I am becoming an old pro at the S-bahn system in germany. When I got on with all of my backpacks and bags, people looked...

Munich

Sorry for our delay in posting it's been hard to find Internet service for the last few days.  Well, our plans totally changed and we spent the 15th in Munich instead of Prauge and had a great day enjoying all the sites and having ginormous beers at the Haufbrough House.  I even had a beer despite my general dislike of beer.  We finished up our day in Munich with a night train ride to Venice.
