Mountains and Kung Fu
After Yangshuo i got a very long 22 hour train from Guilin to Kunming in Yunnan province. Then a bus from Kunming to Dali (6 hours). Pouring with rain when i arrived i flagged down a taxi to take me to the hostel where i got a dorm bed. It felt very strange to be traveling again on my own after such a long time in one place, i felt like i had …
One bad GH, one good.
I arrived in Dali and struggled a bit to find a guest house that I liked. Eventually I decided to head back to the Tibetan Lodge, a place where Dave and I stayed when we were here last time. Error. On first look the room I got was small but OK. At 2am this morning, when I could still hear the people in the bar opposite (which was not there 2 years …
Dubious Dali
Kuljettaja jätti meidät pyynnöstämme Dalin vanhaan kaupungin osaan joka osoittautui todella kummallisennäköiseksi kyläksi. Rakennukset, tiet, eikä edes liikenne muistuttaneet millään tavalla muuta Kiinaa. Kävelimme koko muurien sisäpuolen läpi aina itäiseltä portilta läntiselle portille asti joka oli yksi reput selässä pitkältä tuntuva katu. …
Day 71 - The Good and the Bad in People
The bus screeches to a stop. The whistle of brakes signaling our arrival in Dali. It's 5am and I’ve been up most of the night reading and enjoying the solitude. After another hour of drifting in and out of sleep, the driver comes through the compartment once again to rouse any stragglers from their beds. Sean and I are one of the last people …
Day 73 - Sleep, Sleet and Scotch
We wake up to snow capped mountains and the misty grey sky enveloping the peaks above us. From the haven of our window at Jade Emu Guesthouse, we gaze out at the pine covered mountainside flecked with patches of innocent white, stretching over the horizon and fading into the abyss as if the hovering fog erased their very existence. The biting cold …

Fantastic accommodation - brand new place with all amenities you need. Staff were really kind and helpful - owner very hands-on and interested in guests welfare. Really good food - in fact, I have no negative comments to make and would definitely recommend it to other travellers.

This place is perfect. They have two guesthouses next to one another. Dave and his wife consider everything their guest might need or want. Everyone comes for a couple of days and ends up staying for a month. They have free laundry, one complimentary bike, pool table, free internet with FB and wifi on all floors in both locations. Centrally located, mountain side, between west gate and the wall.

felt like home. Clean. Great staff. Easy to do stuff and get around. What a welcome relief to beleaguered travelers. Nothing bad to say this is truly a great place.

What a combination to have - the best place as well as the cheapest for quality.
