Leaving Lima, eventually :)

G'day! We are writing from the Lima airport in Peru. Missed check into our flight by 5 mins - it takes longer here than in Perth and now we are waiting for another flight, which is 18 hours away. Ha ha ha not so bad, thank God for WiFi at Starbucks, we can entertain ourselves here for several hours. Well we took the bus from Cusco, Peru to Lima, Peru and it was a short 21 hour journey :) Ha ha fortunately you drive at night and they drive on the worst parts of the road in the middle of the ni...

Day 1- My wardrobe malfunction

Well I made it down here to Lima in one piece...job one acomplished. The flight was ok but was unfortunately, was stuck in the uncomfortable middle SEAT with the half drunk Guatemalan guy who wouldn’t stop talking. Not even the head phones in my ears or my closed eyes would stop this guy. The real issue I was having was the little tiny hole I had in my one pair of jeans decided to get huge to the point where half my ass was hanging out. Fortunately, I had my sweatshirt to wrap around my...

Back in Lima

We arrived back in Lima after a longer than expected bus ride. We stood in line for over an hour and jostled with the locals. We checked into the Inka Lounge, which as promised, was clean, and service was friendly. As we hung around here waiting for our flight back to California, we enjoyed the comforts of the big city, including a lovely HotCakes breakfast at McDonald's. Mmmmmmm!

Lima

Im getting worse at this travelling stuff. I arrived too late for my flight this morning from Cusco but luckily I was able to take the next one which was only 15 minutes later. All was peachy until I went through the metal detectors. I had put a rope and some other climbing gear in my carry on baggage to reduce my excess of my checked baggage. The climbing gear made it through but I had to leave behind a brand new rope and my Leatherman knife (which I forgot was in my backpack). The plane was...

A Day Of Food Firsts

We woke up bright and early in order to see the parrots that we had slept in and missed the day before. At around 6 am we headed off back through the jungle to a little stand by a clay lick. Like the butterflies, parrots lick the clay for its salt, and that neutralizes the toxins in all of the fruit they eat for the rest of the day. It took a little bit of waiting, but eventually there were dozens of parrots all congregating together. We saw three different species, and we both decided we li...

Lima

Our visit to Chile had been short, due to the planning of flights, but we had longer in Peru. The first stop was Lima and this was in preparation of joining the 45 day tour that would take us all the way to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. We arrived and were instantly swamped by taxi drivers fighting to get our fare. This harked back to travels in Asia, but we had forgotten exactly what it was like. We found a suitable taxi and, after a little circling, got to our hostel. We were staying in Miraflo...

Fontänen in Lima - fontanas de Lima

One Day in Lima

... able to see the three main buildings: the Archbishop's Palace, the Government Palace and the Cathedral in the middle of which stands a lovely fountain. When you travel South America, this is the kind of place you would expect, you are suddenly right in the middle of a wide square, surrounded by colors and sounds that reflect the buzz of a Latino City . Just walk around it and pay attention to how the colors of the buildings blend ...

Arrived in Lima, Peru

... corn tamale which was OK - not much chicken. The breakfast room is very small, about 9 tables, and there were some people there from another OAT group who had just arrived - 6 am - and it was now about 11 am - that is why i came in early to rest up the first day. Anyway, it was nice to chat and I may be going out to eat with them tonight. Very cute room, floor is all tile back and white checks, 20 foot ceilings, all table bottoms are from old sewing machines and ...

What an eye opener

... At ´Hogar de Cristo´there are three groups of people - the orphan boys who were found on the streets, the disabled people who were also found on the streets and finally a group of elderly people for which the place is a budget funded home for them. We were first taken to meet the street boys, all of which are under 18. Most of them were at school but we had the chance to meet 3 of them. What had struck me about S.O.S, also struck me at Hogar de Cristo - everyone seems so happy ...
