Culture Change in Kunming

A travel blog entry by jamesgeorge232

Ni Hao! Welcome to the next part of my travelling blog. This time coming from my time in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.

The journey between Kolkata and Kunming wasn't pleasant. The flight left at 1am and arrived at 5.30am. No sleep was possible because apparently it is far more important to be fed and refreshed during these wee hours in …

The last on China

A travel blog entry by mar-2011

My last blog on China...Wow, I can't believe how time has flown by!

The last couple of weeks I've heard many fellow travellers state their (sometimes a bit oversimplified) opinions on the country and its people (some even after visiting for three weeks), but frankly I find it a little too complex to draw any conclusions about China. In the …

We arrived at Kunming airport and the first thing we noticed is that it wasn't half as hot or humid as the other places we had been! Although the scenery was really lovely and the skies were blue, even in the city so there was no sign of the usual pollution that has been ever present in the other Chinese cities we have been! We had a decision to …

Arriving in Spring City

A travel blog entry by meilanni

That's what Kunming is called: Spring city, for its eternal spring season. And pleasant weather it was. Though during every night it rained and thundered a lot, but that was a nice change compared with a sand storm and the polluted air in the north of China. First day there I did nothing but rest and upload pictures here haha, so now 2 weeks later …

    Something Missing

Stayed in 10bed dorm (Y35). Clean sunlit room. Clean bathroom. Good location close to city center and buses. Slow internet. Nice common area on roof top. Moderate priced food. Apathetic staff (even by China standards). Place engenders people not to mix.

    Great location, but noisy

Hump was in a great location. It also had a terrific common space. It was very comfortable to hang out and eat. drink, or socialize. The problem were the rooms. The first room we had was very dark and extremely noisy. They did construction in the middle of the night. The second room was much better, but still the noise level was an issue. In general, if you are looking for a great location and want to have good common space and a way to meet other travellers, this is a good option.

There's a great community area, each bunk is equipped with it's own locker, bathroom and shower were basic but nice. Would recommend this place!

Comfortable place if you get the right room

This is a very conveniently located hostel, although the prices reflect this fact. We stayed in two different (private) rooms: one with a private bathroom (which was great), one using shared bathroom facilities (not good). This place left me with a feeling that they were trying to maximize profit and prices were raised on June 1, 2012 while we were there. The roof top facilities, pool table and bar still made it a very nice place though and the location was very central, so I was left feeling overall quite satisfied. I'd have given 4 stars if I didn't stay in the cheaper private room (it was worth the extra money for the private bathroom, MUCH nicer room).

Good location, but buy some ear plugs

Conviently located in the centre of Kunming, good value for dorm rooms, but they can be quite loud at night, so a pair of ear plugs will be a good investment if you are a light sleeper.
The hostel has a large communal restaurant and bar area, complete with open air balcony overlooking the city.

    Very good!

Awesome in every aspect except for the helpfulness of the staff. We emailed and Skyped them weeks before asking them to book tickets for over night train to Dali in advance (this is a service advertised on their website). The replied that it would be fine and they would do it three days in advance for us. When we got there and asked them about it the girl seemed very surprised and said they don't do that - she knew nothing of my email. There ended up being no tickets available.
Apart from that, it was a cool hostel great atmosphere and despite warnings everywhere about possible noise problems and earplugs next to the bed, we had a good quiet nights sleep.
